Chelsea Handler scheduled to leave E! will be airing the last episode of Chelsea Lately on Aug. 26. Since Handler’s announcement that the comedienne will be ending her 7 year run with E!, fans wanted to know what was the comedic TV host going to do next and where was she going to go? Now the answer we have all been waiting for is here. The winner of the “Who is getting Chelsea Handler” contest is none other than Netflix. That is right, after meeting with Netflix, Handler decided that Netflix was the best home for her.
Though the new show will be under the late-night style, once it is streaming, it obviously can be seen at any time. The new show is slated to begin in 2016. Ted Sarandos, the Chief Content Officer at Netflix said that the Internet has taken traditional television and basically disrupted it. Sarandos explains that along with Handler, Netflix will try to re-imagine what late-night TV is now to keep up with the new generation of on-demand viewers. Netflix is most likely going to take a different approach to how the episodes will be released. So it may not release all of the episodes at one time but rather scale back and release them by the week or maybe a couple of episodes a week. Those details are still being worked out.
Not only will Netflix air the comedienne’s new show but Handler is also going to be doing comedy specials exclusively for the company. Handlers bestselling book, Uganda Be Kidding Me is going to be the first stand-up performance special based on the TV hosts very successful tour with the same name. It will be followed by four docu-comedy specials in 2015 where viewers can watch the comedic host get a better understanding ranging from politics, sports to Silicon Valley.
Handler has repeated spoken out of her unhappiness with E! Since the news of her actually ending her run with E!, everyone was wondering who was going to get her? Where was Handler going to go? Well it seems that the coolest of the cool, Netflix, ended up winning Handler over the other offers from various stations. “I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch,” Handler said in a statement, “so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were.” Handler went on to say that she felt that Netflix was the most forward thinking company that she spoke with and even called them alert. Handler jokes that like with a good man, she made her move.
The best part of the deal is that Netflix will be offering Chelsea uncensored and unfiltered in 2016, with the new series. Something that has fans excited because that is something the comedic host was unable to do on television. Now, with Netflix, Handler can finally spread her wings and let the snake tongued opinions fly. The new series will also feature interviews with celebrity guests as does her show Chelsea Lately has now.
With Netflix winning out Handler and scooping her up, fans have a lot to look forward too. Though the new series is slated for 2016, once she is done with E! at least fans have some docu-specials they can catch of Handler to look forward to.
