The cast of the upcoming new Daredevil television series continues to grow. Marvel Entertainment recently announced the casting of actor Elden Henson for Marvel’s Daredevil. The show is being produced by ABC and Marvel Entertainment exclusively for Netflix. Henson will play the role of Foggy Nelson, the best friend and confidante of Daredevil aka Matt Murdock.
In the new Daredevil television series, Henson enters a growing cast of thespians. Actor Charlie Cox has already been cast as the Man Without Fear, Daredevil/Matt Murdock. Vincent D’Onofrio will be playing Daredevil’s arch-enemy, Wilson Fisk aka the Kingpin. Rosario Dawson has also been cast in a guest-star role, but the identity of her character is still unknown.
Henson is famous for playing the role of Fulton Reed in The Might Ducks films from Disney. Most recently, he portrayed Pollux in The Hunger Games franchise. The character of Franklin “Foggy” Nelson is one of the most important members of the Daredevil mythos. Foggy Nelson has existed in the comics for 50 years. The character first appeared in the pages of Daredevil Issue No. 1 in 1964. The character was created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett. Much like Matt Murdock, Foggy has a friendship with the community of Hell’s Kitchen and a passion for improving it and helping the residents. Foggy will also help people from all walks of life.
Another reason Foggy is such an important character is because he eventually discovers Daredevil’s identity as his best friend Murdock. So Foggy has to help maintain Daredevil’s secret. The two meet during their law school days and become roommates and fast friends.
Foggy and Murdock have also been rivals in love in past comic storylines. The tragic character Karen Page was a love interest for both Foggy Nelson and Daredevil. Through the years, Foggy has remained one of Murdock’s most loyal friends and allies. However, their friendship has endured many trials and tribulations due to the danger of Murdock’s double-life as Daredevil. The new television show will hopefully exhibit those aspects of the dynamic between the Murdock and Foggy Nelson relationship. A great story would be Foggy’s loyalty being put to the test in order to protect his friend. Based on his acting history, Henson appears to be a tremendous casting choice for the role of Foggy.
The new Daredevil television series will follow Matt Murdock’s quest to fight injustice as a lawyer by day and as Daredevil by night. Murdock was blinded by chemicals as a young boy in an accident, but the chemicals imbued Murdock with enhanced senses. Murdock’s new-found abilities empower him to become the vigilante known as Daredevil. Daredevil’s domain is modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.
The casting news for Daredevil has been picking up in tremendous fashion in recent weeks with the announcements of the roles of Daredevil, Kingpin and now Foggy Nelson. The casting of Elden Henson in Marvel’s new Daredevil show appears to be a strong, yet unconventional and inspired, casting choice. The new show is produced by Marvel Television with ABC Studios for Netflix. Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus) is helming the series. Marvel’s Daredevil will premiere with 13 episodes on Netflix in 2015.
