Following the series of promotions and performances, Jennifer Lopez may have a new album flop on her hands. The latest full length, AKA, from the Puerto Rican-bred, New York native artist has received little praise from the critics and poor album sales. Although the results only reflect a prediction of first week sales, Lopez’s new album was filled with just as much promotion and is still going to be a flop.
Lopez’s competition for first week sales comes from the British-sensation Sam Smith and may trump AKA’s success. As reported by VH1’s Rob Shuter, Lopez is expected to sell 30,000 to 40,000 copies. Her last album, Love?, did not have any chart-topping singles attached and performed poorly in sales. Within Love?’s first week of sales in 2011, the album reached 83,000 copies sold and less than 400,000 copies sold to date.
This result comes as a bit of a shock. Following her highly publicized break-up from husband Marc Anthony, Lopez’s career was not as prominent and successful as before. Her placement in music and movies was becoming scarce and the new mother is rarely seen in the public eye. With the new position as one of the American Idol judges, Lopez found a metaphorical resurrection in stardom.
The newly single mother of two became a household name for a new generation of fans. Still keeping her infamous “J-Lo” nickname, the Bronx raised celebrity was seen everywhere. Performing new material with producer/rapper Will.I.Am and being honored at 2012’s American Music Awards, Lopez reclaimed her notoriety in the public eye. Most recently, Lopez has been on a campaign for her new predicted flop album AKA.
Making appearances on several news stations, Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, and performing with Pitbull at the opening ceremony for the World Cup, the 44 year-old singer/actress was becoming a very recognizable household name, again. Not since the early 2000’s has Jennifer Lopez’s name been heavily in the tabloids as 2014. Mainly praised for her beauty, assets, fashion and high-profiled relationships, Lopez’s musical career has not recovered since 2005.
Much of the world recognized Jennifer Lopez as an actress. Her uncanny performance in the Selena biopic made her an instant celebrity. Shooting to the forefront of magazine publications, newspapers, and gossip tabloids, Lopez star power was growing. Following her moving performance as the late singer Selena, Lopez starred in a large number of blockbuster movies like Anaconda, Jack, Out of Sight, Antz, The Wedding Planner, and many more. As her star power grew, the world discovered her other passion for music. With the release of her debut album and hit-single If You Had My Love, J.Lo quickly became a chart-placing singer.
Although just a prediction of a flop, this poor performance in album sales may be very accurate. Recognized globally for her assets and beautiful looks, Lopez’s starpower has not been the same since her first venture into the music world. With the flop performance of her new album, Lopez fails to maintain the same pull that the multi-platinum On the 6, J.Lo, and This is Me…Then had.
