TV journalist and talk show host Katie Couric walked down the aisle on Saturday to Chicago native and New York financier John Molner in a tiny yet intimate gathering in their East Hampton home. Couric and Molner exchanged vows before 50 guests that included their children who participated in the ceremony. Molner’s son and daughter read passages to the couple while Couric’s 18-year-old daughter Carrie sang a song.
This marks the second marriage for both Couric and Molner. John Molner divorced his first wife while Couric has been single for the past 16 years following the sudden death of her husband of nine years, Jay Monanhan who lost his battle with colon cancer back in 1998 at the age of 42. Monahan’s death urged Couric to become a spokesperson for colorectal cancer and even went as far as having her own colonoscopy performed for television cameras back in 2000. Katie Couric’s crusade to shine a spotlight and raise awareness to colon cancer resulted in a record increase in the number of Americans getting the life saving medical procedure.
Now finding love for the second time, both Katie Couric and John Molner wanted to keep their nuptial celebration very low-key without the hoopla that usually accompanies a celebrity wedding. Katie Couric passed on the traditional wedding dress and opted for a simple ivory lace Carmen Marc Valvo dress. The bride did manage however to take the time to make the announcement of becoming Mrs. John Milner via her Twitter account.
The 51-year-old John Molner proposed to the 57-year-old television news anchor last year following a two-year courtship. Molner reportedly popped the question over the Labor Day weekend on the beach at sunset of their East Hampton home and presented his bride-to-be with a cushion cut diamond engagement ring.
Now a newlywed, it is anyone’s guess if the busy working couple will take any time to go on a honeymoon. While John Molner who is head of mergers and acquisitions for investment company Brown Brothers Harriman and Company, Katie Couric’s work schedule doesn’t seem to slow down. Couric who had spent a good portion of her career as the Co-Anchor of NBC’s The Today Show has seen herself moving to Anchor the evening news at CBS for a brief stint before taking a turn reporting for ABC news. For the past two seasons, Couric would host her own day-time talk show called Katie that announced in December of last year would be ending production due to poor ratings. Katie taped its last original episode on June 12.
With no time to mourn the loss of her talk show, Couric is reported to be focusing on her work as global anchor of Yahoo! News, a role which she has been performing since January of this year in conjunction with her duties on the now defunct talk show. Katie Couric also managed to squeeze in the time to produce and release a documentary called Fed Up.
Many message boards are threaded with Katie Couric fans sending the couple well wishes. Fans of the television personality seem especially happy that Couric took her time after 16 years to find what appears to be just the right partner.
