Raising Money for Charity by Speedrunning Video Games (SGDQ) Begins Today

Video Game Speedrun Summer Games Done Quick Charity Doctors Without Borders

Summer Games Done Quick has officially begun. Prepare yourself for a weeklong event of speedrunning video games to raise money. What is this money being raised for? Doctors Without Borders, a humanitarian-aid group bringing help across the globe. Who is putting on the event? The speedrunning community, Speed Demos Archive and Games Done Quick. What better way to start off your summer than to enjoy an enormous list of video games being played through at high speeds for a great cause.

Doctors Without Borders is an international, non-governmental group founded in 1971. It began in Geneva, Switzerland, as Médecins Sans Frontières. The group focuses it’s efforts to bring medical professionals to those in need around the globe. The humanitarian-aid organization gathers doctors, nurses, logistical experts and more to volunteer for countries afflicted by a lack of healthcare. If you would like to donate to this cause, head on over to the Summer Games Done Quick page; link below.

The bi-annual event kicked off with Super Mario 3D World and was immediately followed by Crash Bandicoot: Warped. The list of games is entirely staggering. Here is a small portion of some of the games to be played:

  • Donkey Kong Country
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Battletoads & Double Dragon
  • Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
  • Mega Man 6
  • Gex 64
  • Bomberman Hero
  • Yoshi’s Story
  • Metroid Fusion
  • Dustforce
  • Ninjabread Man
  • Sonic Unleashed
  • Super Meat Boy
  • Psychonauts
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution
  • Super Mario Sunshine

The list goes on and on and on until the grand finale Saturday night; Final Fantasy VI (estimated as a seven hour run). All kinds of shenanigans will take place, such as bonus incentives, glitch runs, and races. Depending on the amount, those that donate have chances to win video game themed prices and influence particular speedruns.
