Rupert Grint to Make Broadway Debut

Rupert Grint

Rupert Grint is following his Harry Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe by making his Broadway debut. He is the one from the main three characters who seemed to take a step back from acting after the end of the franchise, but that was due to going into voice acting and theater instead. The actor went into the UK’s version of Broadway, the West End.

Many of the Harry Potter actors either came from the West End or went into it after the end of the franchise. Warwick Davis is just one of the actors in the movies who came from and went back to the West End. David played the Goblin Bank Teller and Professor Flitwick in the first movie. He then reprised his role as the professor throughout the franchise, later added the role of Griphook in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Grint will take on the role of Frank Finger in It’s Only a Play by Terrence McNally. He is joined by other A-list actors, including Matthew Broderick and Megan Mullally. The play is about a director who takes on a play written by a man with his career on the line. It was first performed in 1986, but this version will be a revised adaptation and will run for 17 weeks from October 9, 2014.

As Grint is to make his Broadway debut, his co-star Radcliffe will be finishing his current time on the stage. The Harry Potter and Woman in Black star is currently starring in The Cripple of Inishmaan, but will finish that engagement in July.

This will not be the first time for the actor best known as Ron Weasley to take the stage. As already mentioned, he made his West End debut last year, when he appeared in Mojo by Jez Butterworth, along with Brendan Coyle and Ben Wishaw from Downton Abbey and Skyfall respectively. Grint played a drug dealer in the theater production, and admitted that he caught the theater bug after that.

It is very different for theater actors compared to movie actors. With a stage, all the graphics are cut out and there is more focus on acting abilities. It can help to push an actor, even if the audience reach is going to be smaller. There is also the fact that retakes are not possible. Theater actors have to go with the flow, and deal with slip-ups, comedic mistakes and things not quite going to plan.

The 25-year-old has also had a number of successful roles since finishing the Harry Potter franchise in 2011. Most of his work has been voice acting though, which includes an upcoming movie, Postman Pat: The Movie where he does the voice of Josh.

Harry Potter stars have done very well for themselves since leaving the show, especially the main three characters. While the 25-year-old actor known best for Ron Weasley seems to have done the least on screen, he has made his theater debut and found that he enjoys that. Grint is now making his Broadway debut, following the likes of Daniel Radcliffe and many of his other costars.
