On Monday, following the arrest of his son, Indio Downey, on suspicion of possessing cocaine and drug paraphernalia, Robert Downey Jr. suggested that there was a connection between his addictive behavior and that of his son’s alleged drug use. Robert Downey Jr. has had his share of battles with drug addiction in the past, and the Iron Man star does not want his son to follow suit and also have problems with fighting drug addiction.
On a more positive note, Robert Downey Jr. said that his son, Indio, 20, will be surrounded by people who have “a lot of family support and understanding,” and he said he was “grateful to the Sheriff’s Department for their intervention,” according to a report in Monday’s USA Today.
Indio Downey was in a car with two other unidentified individuals in West Hollywood, California, when police stopped the vehicle and arrested him on the charges of suspicion of possessing cocaine and drug paraphernalia, according to Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Dave Valentine. The two other people in the vehicle with Indio were not arrested or charged.
The arrest of Indio Falconer Downey, according to TMZ, came after the police conducted a search of the car. Indio was booked on the drug related charges and spent several hours in jail. He was released shortly after midnight on Monday morning on a bail of $10,250. A court date has been set in the matter for Aug. 29.
Indio’s father, Robert Downey Jr., fought against drug addiction for years in Hollywood, even as his fame as an actor kept growing. However, he also began to become more and more unreliable and flaky, until many directors did not want to work with him. Robert Downey Jr. was arrested multiple times by the police on drug-related charges. He was even sentenced and was incarcerated in L.A. County Jail and the California State Prison, Corcoran, during the 1990s and early 2000s. By the time he got married to his current wife, Susan Levin, in 2005, he had stopped using drugs. He and his wife had a son, Exton, in 2012.
After he finally went into rehab and was able to kick his drug habit, Robert Downey Jr. was given a second chance by Hollywood. He has since become one of the hottest movie stars around. Indio’s father hopes that his son will also get the help that he needs, and will become a success story rather than, as the Sherlock Holmes star put it, “a cautionary tale.”
At the age of 9, Indio Downey acted in the 2005 movie Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The movie also starred his father, and Indio played a young version of his father’s character in the film.
Robert Downey Jr., according to sources who know the family, has been privately working with his son for years to help him with his addiction problem. This shows Downey’s concern for his son, unlike experiences that the actor says he had with his own father getting high.
Indio Downey, the son of Robert Downey Jr, was arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs and drug paraphernalia on Sunday afternoon, but he is free on bail. His father suggests that there might be a connection between his past addictive behavior and Indio’s current struggles with the same problem. Perhaps there is, as Robert Downey, Jr., has had more than his share of issues with drug addiction.
