Disney Infinty: Marvel Super Heroes is the highly anticipated sequel to Disney Infinity – a new type of media combining the pleasures of playing video games and toy collecting into one. Players place collectable Disney and Marvel character figurines onto a base connected to the gaming system and play as those figurines in the game.
Fans of the Disney universe and those of the world of Marvel, alike, were nothing short of ecstatic when witnessing the announcement of Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes on April 30. The announcement released a trailer revealing the inclusion of familiar figures from the Marvel universe as playable characters.
Infinity’s sales have sky-rocketed since its release last August, making it one of the most popular video games of the year. It has sold over 3 million starter units alone in addition to vast amounts of individual figures and power discs being sold to enhance the player’s gaming experience. Its sequel, scheduled for release this fall, is anticipated to perform just as well if not better than the original game.
While the original Disney Infinity was assembled of a cast coming solely from the classic Disney and Pixar vaults, the 2.0 edition of Infinity is stated to introduce Marvel heroes and villains into the game. A few notable names include: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow and Spider-Man. On May 22, more footage was released revealing the plot for an Avengers-themed play set (a ‘play set’ is a scripted, mission-based adventure mode available in the game) taking place in a frozen New York City under attack by the villainous Loki and his monstrous minions.
This new footage of Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes furthered the excitement of the die-hard super hero video gamers and toy collectors, but also left wiggle room for followers of Disney and Pixar to question if Infinity was going to combine characters from the classic vaults with Marvel’s super heroes or not. After much social media speculation on the possibility of hidden Disney characters in the 2.0 announcement trailer, audiences got their answer on May 30 when yet another teaser was released revealing two new Disney and Pixar characters that are playable in the open-world creation of the game’s Toy Box mode.
The first of the new figures is the Scottish Princess Merida from Pixar’s Academy Award-Winning animated feature, Brave. Merida’s figurine and character design highlight her special ability as an archer. The teaser reveals her bow and arrow to be her main weapon of choice which makes Merida, alongside Marvel’s Hawkeye, one of the first archers to join the world of Disney Infinity. The red-headed heroine also demonstrates great strength in melee combat using both a steel cutlass and the wood of her bow to ward off her enemies.
The second of the announced characters is one the public seems very excited about. The mistress of all evil herself, Maleficent, makes her way into the toy box. Maleficent is shown antagonizing Merida in the latest teaser by using copious amounts of dark magic originating from her staff. She is also seen releasing a murder of crows from atop a tower and summoning a wall of thorns, both which seem to be powers included in her arsenal. The design of the Infinity version of the villainess favors that of Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of the dark faerie in the newly released live-action film, Maleficent, as opposed to the original concept of the green-skinned enchantress from Sleeping Beauty. Regardless, this character looks to become a favorite among many of the gamers.
The latest trailer released for the game is that of the Spider-Man themed play set. On June 10, Spidey fans got a glimpse of this exciting new adventure featuring playable characters, Spider-Man, Nova, Iron Fist, Nick Fury and the despicable Venom.
Disney Infinity has made its definite mark on both the video game and the toy business and it seems it will only continue to do so. With an ever-growing fan base and brilliant team of marketing experts, the hype around Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes is a very promising contribution to its success. Executive producer of the game, John Vignocchi, is very adamant on expressing his saying, “If you can dream it, you can do it,” and it seems Disney Infinity has done just that.
The amazing combination of video games and toys made available in Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes will be released this fall on all major gaming systems including Xbox One and Playstation 4. Copies of the starter kit of the original Disney Infinity and the currently released characters can be purchased wherever video games are sold.
