NBC’s America’s Got Talent has had a long-standing history of great magicians, but very few have done great card trick performances, because of the need to be so close to the judges. It seems to make the act a little hard to follow for the audience because things are happening on such a small scale. However, Smoothini pulled it off, and this is one of the many reasons why he is the sixth best audition act this season on America’s Got Talent.
Smoothini described himself as the “Ghetto Houdini;” that he is Houdini, but ghetto. He then spoke about how he is a “bar magician.” Judge Howie Mandel talked about how he was performing at a big bar on America’s Got Talent. Smoothini then approached the four judges at their table to perform his act.
He pulled out a deck of cards, two red balls and a salt shaker, half-way full of salt, pointing out that he was too broke to afford any bigger props. He waved the deck of cards in the judges’ face, then set it down, telling them that to do tricks as he did, he had to perform them exquisitely. As he re-annunciated the word, he touched the tip of his tongue and coughed, causing two decks of cards to fly out of his mouth. It was a neat trick that impressed the judges.
Smoothini then grabbed two red balls. He put one in Mel B’s hand while holding the other in his own. He made the second ball disappear, and then instructed Mel B to open her hand. Two were now there, at which she yelled “Shut up!” It was great start to his act, and Smoothini was quickly establishing himself as the sixth best audition act on America’s Got Talent this season.
The magician followed that up by pouring some of the salt from the salt shaker into his left hand. He then blew on it, and when he opened his hand, the salt was gone. A few moments later, he made a fist with his right hand and began to pour salt out of the hand. The judges were amazed, but it only got better. He then opened both hands to show that nothing was in either, made a fist with his right hand again and began to pour more salt. That brought a big “wow” from all the judges. Even Nick Cannon said it was “Pretty cool.”
Finally, he took one of the judge’s cups and poured the liquid from the cup into his left hand. He opened both hands to show that no liquid was present in either hand, then clenched his right hand again and began to pour the liquid out of it into Howie Mandel’s cup. That brought a gigantic “whoa” from Mandel.
It was a great act that brought four enthusiastic yeses from the judges. The audience was equally amused and enjoyed his tricks. Smoothini truly showed that he was one of the best audition acts on America’s Got Talent this season.
