Cinemark Holdings, Inc have partnered up with Twentieth Century Fox creating the Best Movie Fest Ever festival which will present a series of film exhibits at a preselected amount of cinemas across the country and in Las Vegas, Nv the events will take place at Century South Point. The Cinemark cinema at the South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa currently has a number of special events but this latest one is actually a “mini film festival.”
Cinemark is one of the world’s largest movie exhibitors and they have begun this series of film festivals with My Favorite Musicals. Three classic movie musicals have been chosen to be shown on the big screen as they were originally presented upon their initial cinematic release.
The first musical is the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic Oklahoma!. This 1995 iconic piece of musical “Americana” has been fully restored at a cost of $4,000. Twentieth Century Fox, along with Fotokem have carefully restored this film from its 65mm Todd-AO negative. According to Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment this restoration will allow audiences to see this wonderful film as it has never been seen before.
Oklahoma! won two Oscars for Best Sound and Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture. The film was nominated for another two Oscars for Best Cinematography, Color and Best Film Editing. The film will be screened at 30 frames per second just like the original 1955 65mm frame rate.
The other two films on offer at the mini film festival are Hello Dolly!, the 1969 Award Winning musical/romantic comedy starring Barbara Streisand, a very young Michael Crawford and Walter Matthau and the 2001 film Moulin Rouge!. The latter two films, as part of the Best Movie Fest Ever at Century South Point, are also award winning productions.
The Baz Luhrmann modern classic won an Oscars for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration and Best Costume Design. It was also nominated for a further six Academy Awards. The film starred Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, Jim Broadbent and Aussie actress and pop star Kylie Minogue as The Green Fairy.
Moulin Rouge!, along with Romeo + Juliet, became a signature of sorts for Luhrmann who enjoyed great success re-imaging “older” themes. Nicole Kidman, as well as Ewan McGregor are mesmerising in the film and English actor Jim Broadbent went on to prove that his appeal in the earlier 2001 film Bridget Jones’s Diary was not the only type of part he could play in a Hollywood movie.
The third film on offer, Hello Dolly! took more Oscars home than the other two films. A massive three Academy Awards went to the 1969 musical “romance” film with gongs for Best Art Direction – Set Decoration, Best Sound and Best Music, Score of a Musical Picture (Original or Adaptation). Barbra Streisand was nominated for her performance as Dolly Levi by the Golden Globes and the BAFTA Awards in 1970, winning neither one.
The showtimes and dates for the Best Movie Fest Ever My Favorite Musicals at Century South Point in Las Vegas are Saturday, July 26 starting at 11:15 a.m. with the screening of Hello Dolly!, followed by Moulin Rouge! at 2:20 p.m. and finally with the newly restored Oklahoma! at 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday, July 29 with the films being in the same order as the 26th but at the later times of 1:00 p.m., 4:15 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased either through the box office or online at Cinemark.com.
