Six Months of Continuous Contact Lens Wear Leaves Girl Blind

Contacts

Many people wear contact lens to help with failing vision in a similar manner to prescription glasses. The  main difference is that contacts are placed directly onto the eye. In some instances people wear these lens in order to change their eye color. Some contact lens are even fashioned after the eyes of characters such as the Sharingan Eye that Itachi Uchiha has from the anime show, Naruto.

Many people find these lens to be fun to wear, even those with prescription contacts, however, they must be taken out and cleaned on a regular basis. According to most eye doctors, eight hours is the maximum length of time that contact lens can safely be worn without being taken out and cleaned. Because she did not follow these directions, one girl has been left blind due to the continuous, six months of wearing of her contacts.

Lian Kao, who is a Taiwanese college student, decided to leave in her contacts for months. In some reports, she did not even take them out when swimming or going into hot tubs. She also left the contacts in while bathing herself. According to one report, Kao did not even clean her contact lens as one is supposed to do while using them in order to keep bacteria from infecting the eye. Contact lens have come a long way from when they first came into the public eye, however, the risk they carry is still ever present.

A lack of oxygen, as stated by one doctor, can cause the surface of the epithelial tissue to be destroyed. This destruction of the tissue brings additional damage as it creates small wounds in the eye which bacteria has easy access to. Infection of the eye can then easily occur as conditions provide a comfortable breeding ground for the bacteria. This could be one reason as to why Kao became blind. Because she choose to leave them in for as long as she did, Kao overused her contacts, causing permanent damage to her corneas.

To break it down even more as to how Kao is now possibly blind from continuously use of her contacts, her eyes were injured by bacterial parasites. Because of the conditions that were created between the contacts and the eye, the parasites fed on the cornea. Medical professionals have said that this case must act as a warning to those who wear contacts and use them in their daily personal hygiene routines. The case of Lian Kao might be something of a reminder for people to take proper care their eyes
