The SyFy Network will air the seventh season of the reality competition show known as Face Off on Tuesday July 22. The fact that the show is now on season seven is a testament to its popularity. Essentially a makeup and prosthetic competition between artists who create creatures from science fiction, horror and fantasy the show is presented by McKenzie Westmore who is part of the Westmore makeup legacy in Hollywood, her father is Michael Westmore. The seasons have between 12 and 16 contestants and there are currently four judges. The most recently added judge, Lois Burwell is well known for her makeup work on Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan and The Green Mile amongst other films that she has worked on.
One big change with the Face Off format in this season is that episode one is actually the audition for the show. Unlike the other seasons, when the camera’s rolled on the show’s opener, the dust had settled on the auditions and the contestants seen were the same ones who would be going against each other throughout the series. This year, the first thing the new hopefuls learn is that they are not really on the show as contestants yet.
The other judges on the show are Ve Neill – known for The Hunger Games, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest; Neville Page, known for Star Trek, Star Trek: Into Darkness and Avatar and Glenn Hetrick, known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Heroes and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Judge Patrick Tatopoulos known for I Am Legend, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, Resident Evil: Extinction left after 2012 and was replaced by several different “guest judges.” These guests included Kevin Smith, Greg Nicotero, and Gale Anne Hurd, among others from the industry.
The seventh season of the SyFy Network reality show Face Off airs with this new change in the format. This popular program was not aired in the United Kingdom until recently and no doubt will be as popular in that country as it is in the U.S. The contestants from prior seasons make appearances at various events in the U.S.A. like comic cons and other conventions where cosplay and cultural references are part of the program.
At the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con held June 20 through the 22nd, previous contestant Alana Rose from season three answered questions while on a panel along with season seven hopeful Keaghlan Ashley who also spoke about the popular show. The overall feeling from the panel audience was one of excitement and an eagerness for the newest season of the series to start. At no time during the question and answer section of the panel did Alana or Keaghlan reveal the “twist” of the newest season’s premiere episode.
Another thing that Keaghlan Ashley did was to create an elf-like creature at Alana Rose’s booth. A local cosplayer, VegasPG (the “PG” stands for Power Girl) was turned into a realistic looking creature. No matter how close the observer got the elf “lady” looked so real and perfect that the makeup and prosthetics could not be spotted.
Seeing this type of “magic” being performed up close by makeup professionals made the excitement level for season seven of SyFy Network’s Face Off and its air date of July 22 quite high. The season opener will be different from any of the prior seasons and it will be interesting to see if Keaghlan Ashley makes it past the first episode. There will be some fans from the Las Vegas Comic Con who will be rooting for her.
