On July 24, the long-awaited and highly anticipated trailer for the Fifty Shades of Grey film was revealed. The movie is the big screen adaptation of the first book in author E L James’ steamy romance trilogy of the same name.
The trailer features the titular characters of Christian Grey, played by Irish actor/model Jamie Dornan from ABC’s Once Upon a Time and Anastasia Steele, portrayed by the lovely Need for Speed actress Dakota Johnson. Audiences got to hear a glimpse of Dornan’s American accent reciting familiar dialogue from the novel. The video continues to reveal an array of captivating footage primarily focusing on the film’s two leads and their individual story lines. The trailer gradually builds in anticipation for the kinky secrets that fans know Christian Grey hides behind closed doors and audiences get a peek at Dornan and Johnson’s more sensual, heated performances.
The creator of this worldwide phenomenon was but a simple British housewife who began writing fan-fiction for Stephenie Meyers’ Twilight in her spare time. E L James states that she is not a trained writer and the role models for her two leading characters, Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, originated from Twilight’s Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. Her hobby of creating fan-fiction turned into a full-on project, which lead to the creation of the Fifty Shades of Grey saga. James reportedly would type a majority of the original manuscript on her BlackBerry whilst riding the subway to her day job.
While James’ writing skills and knack for storytelling have received mixed reviews, her work continues to remain a hot topic years after the original publishing of the first book in 2011. There are many correlating lines throughout the love story of Fifty Shades of Grey that line up with Meyers’ Twilight, but James’ efforts provide text aimed strictly for adults. The text is extremely explicit due to the heated sexual themes and dialogue throughout each novel. The act of BDSM (Bondage, Domination, Sadism and Masochism) is a more specific topic that has arisen a vast amount of attention along with bits of controversy. James refers to her novels as love stories, though there are those who state that they border erotica. The truth is that that answer belongs in the eyes of the beholder.
With the reveal of the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer, fans will, undoubtably, become extremely anxious as they will have to continue to wait for the film to be released in 2015. Although the production has wrapped filming and is well underway in post-production, producers have agreed that, from a marketing standpoint, it is best to hold out until next Valentine’s Day and avoid competition with the remaining summer and fall blockbusters of the year.
With nearly a seven-month marketing campaign and an already-established fan base, it is almost a given that Fifty Shades of Grey will prove to be a mega-hit at the box office. Though the series has a large female following, the male fan base is rather sizable as well and is destined to continue growing. Many men having even attested to using the books as a “how-to guide” to spice things up in the bedroom. Statements as far-fetched as saying that marriages have been saved from the use of James’ novels have been made as well. What James intended as nothing more than a side-project has acquired worldwide renown that not only provides pleasure to its readers, but has inevitably opened many individuals up to accept sexuality in society and find a level of comfort in it that was not necessarily present earlier.
With the release of this first trailer, Fifty Shades is determined to become the talk of the town once again and will most likely accomplish this goal as more footage from the film and marketing for the series is gradually released. Fifty Shades of Grey opens in theaters on Valentine’s Day 2015 and E L James’ original trilogy of novels can be downloaded as ebooks or bought wherever books are sold.
