Grey’s Anatomy season 11 will get back to its initial focus and be all about Meredith Grey. Executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, admitted that it is clear in the writer’s room that the show is going back to its routes. Dr. Grey was originally the main character, but eventually the other interns, residents and attendings became important roles. Their roles originally interlinked with the main character, but did spin off into their own.
However, Rhimes wants it to be all “about Meredith” again, which was clear from the end of season 10. In the season finale, Maggie admitted that her biological mother originally worked at the hospital, and her name was even on the door. Richard Webber soon realized that this was his illegitimate daughter, and Meredith’s half-sister.
It will be interesting to see how the new season of Grey’s Anatomy will play out. Just how will Meredith take to hearing that she has another half-sister? The end of season 8 saw the death of her half-sister, Lexie, after the plane crash. She found it difficult to accept her half-sister into her life, but eventually opened her heart. Will she do the same with this half-sister, considering the relationship that her mother and Richard had?
The introduction of Maggie is not the only way season 11 of Grey’s Anatomy will all be about Meredith. June saw the announcement that Caterina Scorsone would become a regular for the season. Scorsone plays Meredith’s sister-in-law, Dr. Amelia Shepherd, who is turning her back on Los Angeles.
It is possibly that Meredith will find herself stuck in between her husband and his sister, as Amelia may run away from her engagement. There are still questions over whether the family will move across country considering Derek’s job offer to work with the President of the United States.
While Rhimes wants season 11 to be all “about Meredith,” there will be other storylines involved. One of those is the mess that Christina Yang left behind by leaving her shares to the hospital and position on the board to Alex Karev. Miranda Bailey was looking forward to that position after Richard informed her he put her name forward for it.
Callie and Arizona also have a continuing storyline from season 10, involving their quest for a second child. It seems at the end that they have decided that surrogacy is the way forward, but that will likely bring drama and complications. Nothing is ever easy on Grey’s Anatomy.
Finally, there will be other couple and baby drama. This time it will be April and Jackson Avery, who were having marital problems when they found out that April was pregnant. There is still a lot to sort out in that relationship, and very little time to do it all.
However, these are likely all just side storylines, as the writer’s focus back on the main character. The executive producer has made it clear that she wants Grey’s Anatomy season 11 to be all about Meredith Grey, which will return to the TV on September 25.
