The band 5 Seconds of Summer and their lead singer Luke Hemmings are using Twitter to tease their new album release via Spotify. The band tweeted yesterday that they would be posting exclusive content on Spotify’s “The Drop,” including playlists, videos and photos, as a lead in for the listing of their debut album on the site. 5SOS is hot as can be at the moment, MTV just announced that the four member band from Sydney, Australia will be performing at the Music Video Awards on August 24.
The 5 Seconds of Summer debut album through Capitol Records is set for release on July 22. The first single from the album, She Looks So Perfect, was released in February and climbed to the top of the charts in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the UK. The lead single from the album peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. As enthusiasm for the four member band has built to a fever pitch, MTV released that the MVA’s would not be complete without a performance by the red-hot Australian group.
Although Hemmings is generally the lead vocalist, each of the members of the band chimes in for vocals as well. Ashton Irwin is the drummer, Calum Hood plays bass and Mike Clifford and Hemmings play guitar. The band first gained fame playing cover tunes on Youtube in 2011. Hemmings, Hood and Clifford were all friends from school who enjoyed playing together. Their organic beginnings has probably fueled their appeal, in contrast to many “boy bands” put together by managers to dance their way through performances.
The band continues to gain momentum and followers for its pop rock and punk sound. They share management with One Direction and front for them on tour. The MVA gig requires 5SOS fans to go home disappointed from their tour stops with One Direction in Dallas and St. Louis. In addition to providing 5SOS to their legion of fans as the warm up act on tour, One Direction members Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan gave 5 Seconds of Summer a significant boost with twitter posts of early recordings. The One Direction guys are fans of Luke Hemmings and his bandmates too.
Luke Hemmings and the other 5SOS members are savvy in the ways of social media. Having started from humble Youtube beginnings, they know the benefit of getting themselves out on the internet. By twitter teasing some original content being released prior to the album debut on Spotify, Luke Hemmings and 5SOS will have fans primed and ready for the album.
Although playful when performing and blasting tweets, the guys in the band still show their humble beginnings. A New York Times review of a show even mentioned that Hemmings gave a shout out to all the moms and dads in the audience, in recognition that many young fans likely had chaperones. Those fans and many others will be happy when they can tune into the MVA’s and see their Aussie heroes live. If all goes according to plans, the efforts of Luke Hemmings and the rest of 5SOS to build excitement for the Spotify album debut via twitter tease will allow them to be introduced as multi-platinum album selling artists at the MVA’s.
