Geeks of America are about to go wild when they get presented with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D meeting up with Xena: Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless. The announcement was made on Tuesday July 22, 2014 that the actress will appear on the action drama sometime during its second season, which premieres on September 23 at 9:00pm. As of now, there has been definitive report on who the character she will play is. However, buzz is going around that it will be S.H.I.EL.D agent Mary Maloney.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D is a television series based on the Marvel comic book series created by the living legend Stan Lee. In the recent comic book movies from Marvel Studios, such as Iron Man and Thor, audiences learned about the government agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D, which deals with all things superhero or alien related. The agency played a bigger role in the plot of 2012’s The Avengers, a film that had super powered beings team up for one adventure.
After the success of The Avengers, director Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios began working on a television series that would tell more in-depth stories of what S.H.I.E.L.D and its agents do when there are no superheroes around. The show would also act as tie-ins to the movies.
The series premiered on September 24, 2013 on the ABC network and received great fan response. However, during the run of its first season, ratings were a bit rocky. In spite of this, the network renewed it for another season, and the news of Lawless’ appearance will surely boost up the ratings.
Before agreeing to meet up with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Lucy Lawless gained fame in 1995 in the television series called Xena: Warrior Princess, where she portrayed a fearless female warrior from the Ancient Greek period. Xena was a spin-off of the series Hercules, starring Kevin Sorbo as the mighty son of Zeus. At first, she was known as the “Destroyer of Nations” because her dark past and thirst for destruction had her siding with evil. But thanks to Hercules, she has a change of heart and makes an attempt to redeem herself by fighting for the greater good. On her quest, she meets Gabrielle, portrayed by Renee O’Conner, a small town bard with a passion for adventure. Xena takes Gabrielle under her wing and together they would go up against some of the world’s toughest opponents, even the gods themselves.
The program ran for six seasons until 2001. Lawless was able to become famous with geeks again in 2005 by joining the cast of the science fiction drama Battlestar: Galactica as the character D’anna Biers. In 2010, she appeared on the Starz series Spartacus: War of The Damned as the sultry Lucretia. She even got to reprise that role for the prequel mini-series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena in 2011.
Throughout the U.S. Lawless is a cult television star, in her homeland of New Zealand she is iconic. So much so that she was awarded the Order of Merit in New Zealand in the summer of 2004 for her continued services to entertainment and the community.
As of now, it is safe to assume that Lawless will be playing the role of Mary Maloney on S.H.I.E.L.D. However, the details are extremely low-key, which is usually how it is done by Marvel when it comes to their television and film plans. However, fans did get the chance to learn more details when Marvel brought its television panel to the annual San Diego Comic-Con event which took place on Thursday July 24, 2014. For the ones who were not able to attend the event, it is best to just stay pumped that Xena will get to meet and fight alongside Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
