Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Trailer Showcases Wraith Powers [Video]

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and developer Monolith Productions have released a new gameplay video for the upcoming, highly anticipated video game release, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. The new video trailer showcases the abilities of the Wraith. The clip showcasing the Wraith powers of Talion is available below.

In the game, the protagonist Talion is resurrected from death by a ghostly Wraith. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. Entertainment and Monolith developers announced that the identity of the Wraith is none other than Celebrimbor. Celebrimbor’s tale was depicted in author J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion.

Celebrimbor was an Elven jewelsmith, and he was known as the greatest jewelsmith of the Second Age. Unfortunately, Celebrimbor was tricked by the Dark Lord Sauron into forging the Rings of Power. Once Celebrimbor realized the Dark Lord’s treachery, he attempted to stand against Sauron, but it was too late. Celebrimbor was captured and tortured and ultimately died. Celebrimbor did manage to forge three Rings of Power for his race, the elves, which were free of Sauron’s corrupting influence. These rings were later carried by the likes of Gandalf and Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings books.

The new Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor trailer that showcases the Wraith powers of Celebrimbor provides a nice overview of the ghost abilities that are imbued into Talion. One power is a type of mental domination. With this ability, Talion can look into the minds of his Orc enemies. Then, Talion can narrow down the Orcs’ strengths and weaknesses. This will be valuable in Talion’s quest for revenge. Once Talion knows an Orc chieftain’s particular strength or fear, he can exploit a fear or weakness against an Orc in battle.

In addition, Talion can also use his Wraith powers to mind control other Orcs. With the mind control powers, Talion can turn the Orcs against each other. This action will create discord within the Orc ranks of Sauron’s army. The trailer depicts Orcs with glowing white eyes who have been hypnotized by Talion, and scores of Orcs fight one another. Based on previous trailers, Talion will also have a Wraith-sense or Wraith-vision to provide enhanced sight of areas throughout Mordor.

The revelation of the Wraith’s identity was very exciting, considering that Celebrimbor is such a crucial character in the lore of Middle-earth. While the game is an original scenario, the playing out of a story involving Mordor, Sauron and Celebrimbor is a very intriguing prospect. Based on official materials from Warner Bros. Interactive, the game will allow powers to discover the origin of the Rings of Power in the actual game. This particular element of Middle-earth’s mythology has not been explored very much outside of the books.

The new trailer for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor that showcases the Wraith abilities players will have in the game provides more exciting insight that appears to be one the most exciting game releases of the year. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor will debut on September 30 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game will be released October 2 for Windows PC and Steam.
