Actor Neil Patrick Harris, who recently wrote a letter expressing his wish to appear in an episode of the FX series American Horror Story: Freak Show to its co-creator, Ryan Murphy, got his wish answered when Murphy tweeted back to him that he could be on the show. Harris, who gets into anything related to magic, circuses and freak shows, was ecstatic when he read Murphy’s tweet on Friday replying to his request.
Murphy tweeted that he had “a role I think you’d love.” Besides being granted the wish of getting his freak on, Harris will also be acting in the upcoming October 3 movie, Gone Girl, starring Ben Affleck.
Harris announced the news in a recent interview with host host Mario Correa on Entertainment Weekly (EW) Radio that he had written Ryan Murphy a letter asking to be on the FX hit series American Horror Story: Freak Show. He stated that he wrote the letter, even while knowing at the time that he did not have room open in his schedule to appear in it.
Still, Neil Patrick Harris decided that he would find some way to make time to appear in the series, if Murphy was able to create a role for him. Excited about the prospect of acting in the show, Harris told EW Radio that acting in American Horror Story: Freak Show “is going to be so unsettling to watch.”
Since the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Neil Patrick Harris is appearing in, “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” is closing on August 17, and How I Met Your Mother has ended its television run, the actor will have some time available on his schedule for other projects, like acting in American Horror Story: Freak Show.
The amazing actress Jessica Lange, who has been on the FX series American Horror Story since its first season, will be returning when season four of the series premieres in October. It will reportedly be Lange’s final season to appear in the series which has largely revolved around her. She will be playing the owner of the freak show, of course. Other stars who will be returning include Angela Bassett, Sarah Poulson and Kathy Bates. Emma Roberts, Frances Conroy and Evan Peters will also be appearing in American Horror Story: Freak Show. Season four will be set in Jupiter, Florida, in the 1950s.
While it is possible that Ryan Murphy was just joking around, fans of the American Horror Story series and of Neil Patrick Harris are hoping that the offer was a serious one, as the Barney Stinson actor would likely do an incredible job of acting in American Horror Story: Freak Show. Speculation has already begun about what sort of character Harris might play, like perhaps an acrobat with the supernatural ability to kill by his gaze or a criminally insane magician who saws women in half for real.
As in the past, the American Horror Story Facebook page will post trailers, photos and news about the upcoming season in the weeks and months preceding its October premiere. The show is being eagerly anticipated by fans and it will likely inspire plenty of scares and thrills to viewers, especially those who get freaked out by clowns, circuses and…freaks.
Besides Neil Patrick Harris being granted his wish of appearing in American Horror Story: Freak Show, he will also be playing a twisted and perverse character in Gone Girl, a crime thriller starring Ben Affleck. The movie will be based on the Gillian Flynn novel of the same name. Gone Girl is scheduled for theatrical release on October 3. Check out the second official trailer from Gone Girl, below!
