The emotional new drama film, Wild, will be in theaters on December 5, 2014. Based on the best-selling biography by Cheryl Strayed, Wild stars Reese Witherspoon as the downtrodden young woman who sets out on a 1,100 mile walk in order to find inner peace. Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, the film also stars Laura Dern, Gaby Hoffmann, and Michiel Huisman.
At the age of 22, Cheryl Strayed was a girl at the bottom of the barrel. Her mother died very suddenly, after being diagnosed with cancer just 7 weeks earlier. On top of that, her marriage was falling apart. She found it difficult to maintain a relationship after getting hitched at such a young age. The weight of her problems drove Strayed into years of wild behavior and partying. After she and her husband split, she became depressed, and started using illicit drugs and alcohol.
In 1995, at the age of 26, the out-of-control heroin addict set out alone in an attempt to gain control of her life. Despite having no experience whatsoever, she set out on a 1,100 mile hike through the mountains of the Pacific Crest Trail, and up through northern California through Oregon. Having never trail hiked before she was not prepared for the challenges and physical demands she had in store. For starters, she over packed, leaving her shoulders and feet raw and blistered with the force of the weight. She encountered the dangers of nature first hand, and all alone. Yet this did not detour her, and she continued onward towards self-discovery.
Time alone in the beautiful scene Pacific coast led Strayed to a revelation. Time away from the temptations of society helped her to slay her inner demons. On March 20, 2012, the writer published her life story in Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail through Knopf Publishing. The book was a hit, and was the first selection for Oprah’s Book Club 2.0. The recognition rose Strayed to number one on the New York Times Best Seller list. By the time the work was published, it was optioned for film right by Reese Witherspoon’s film company, Pacific Standard.
Pacific Standard has also been working on the film, Gone Girl, staring Ben Affleck and set to debut on October 3, 2014. America’s almost sweetheart, Reese Witherspoon, has been keeping busy with three other films on the bill for her this year including The Good Life, and Inherent Vice. The three-time Oscar winner, Jean-Marc Vallée, directs. It is his first film since his smashing success with Dallas Buyers Club last year. That film won both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto Oscars for Best Performance by and Actor in a Leading Role, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. The film also won Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews an Oscar for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling, and racked up three other nominations.
