With news of his private wedding to Glee star Naya Rivera blasting out over the internet, Ryan Dorsey is suddenly hot news. In addition to being in the news for his wedding, Dorsey’s acting career is taking off as well. The West Virginia born Dorsey landed a role in the upcoming film Blood Father playing a supporting role opposite such well-known names as Mel Gibson, Elisabeth Rohm and William H. Macy. The movie is set for a 2015 premiere.
Dorsey hails from Chesapeake, West Virginia, which is not far from its capital Charleston. He tried his hand at baseball in high school with hopes of fame and fortune, but never found his niche in the game. He realized that his true talents lay elsewhere and he struck out for New York where he enrolled in the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. Other notable alums from the Conservatory include Matthew Fox of Lost and Rivera’s cast mate on Glee, Josh Sussman.
After his stint in acting school, Dorsey made his way to Los Angeles, California. He caught quite a bit of positive attention in 2011 as he was included as Cosmopolitan’s featured bachelor for West Virginia in their bachelor face off by state. Around the same time, Dorsey was beginning to log some television appearances. His credits include You’re the Worst, Southland, Parks and Recreation and Mob City. He also landed roles in short films such as Unspoken and Groovin’ On. While Ryan Dorsey may be suddenly hot based on news of his recent marriage, he has been laboring to obtain recognition with his acting.
Many observers feel the marriage could be a short one because Rivera called off an engagement to hip hop recording artist Big Sean in April. The couple apparently set July 19 as their wedding date and Rivera kept the date but swapped in a new groom. Although the circumstance of a recent broken engagement does appear to create the impression that the marriage occurred for the wrong reasons, the couple have known each other for four years and have been good friends. Romantic relationships based on an initial friendship and common interests always have the potential to thrive. Rivera has certainly gone all in as a bride to Dorsey, the actress has already changed her Twitter and Instagram accounts to identify herself as Naya Rivera Dorsey.
In the upcoming Blood Father, Dorsey plays a drug dealer named Shamrock. The movie is said to be a Gibson vehicle along the same vein as Liam Neeson’s Taken. In the movie, Gibson playes an ex-convict fighting to save his teenaged daughter from a dangerous drug lord. The film was shot in New Mexico and the excited Dorsey tweeted out on set photos during filming. The movie adds another notch in his acting credit belt as Dorsey attempts to gain a starring role in a feature film. Given the publicity following his wedding to Rivera, movie producers who were unaware of Dorsey have now seen his image splashed all over print media and the internet. Ryan Dorsey is suddenly a hot new name. Hopefully, his enhanced public profile will lead to bigger and better acting gigs.
