The secrets surrounding the appearance of two white flags on top of the Brooklyn Bridge have deepened as the New York Police Department discloses that they do not know who performed the security gap or how they were able to achieve it. White flags, which are considered to be symbols of surrender, fluttered from poles on the stone supports on top of the legendary bridge which links Manhattan and Brooklyn over the East River.
NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton stated that he was not very happy about the happening. Other New York authorities explained that they have video tape of an assembly of about five individuals who were seen walking onto the bridge not long after 3 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
Police authorities explained that it was about 3:30 a.m. when the lights, on the bridge, that shine on the U.S. flags on both sides of the bridge could be seen showing the flags waving in the wind and then the beams went dark. It was around 5:30 a.m. when bridge construction workers happened to see that two apparently white flags had taken place of the American flags, reported the NYPD.
Commissioner Bratton declared that there was nearly a 15 minute gap between the tower lights going dark and white flags being erected in the U.S. flags place. However when the NYPD inspected the scene, they discovered that the two American flags had not been replaced but instead have been defaced by being bleached of their color and then put back up on the bridge. There had also been huge aluminum tins which had been placed over the lights to hide their glow.
It does not appear at this time that the act was a blatant act of terrorism, some sort of political statement or even an art project. The NYPD is definitely unclear what the group was trying to do.
The commissioner said that extensive testing is being done on the two flags. It also appears that all the perpetrators might possibly have had some sort of experience in climbing, construction or even with bridgework. They could have even had prior experience of being up on the flag stands on the Brooklyn Bridge.
It was explained that when the NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit went up the bridge, the gateways were still erected and locked up. For a group of individuals to be able to get around that, still climb up to the tower and have the exact size cover to put over the light that is definitely indication of pre planning operations.
The Brooklyn Bridge, which is operated by the New York City Department of Transportation, is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the whole United States. The bridge span, which was finished in 1883, is also considered a National Historic Landmark.
The U.S. flags are flown from the towers every day of the year and are replaced by transportation workers when they become tattered. This is around every eight weeks or so. They are always both lit up from the bottom by a light at the bottom of each pillar in the evenings.
There are at least 120,000 vehicles, 4,000 walkers and 3,000 bicyclists who cross the Brooklyn Bridge each day, explained the DOT. The bridge is one of the greatest protected landmarks in the whole city, being continuously observed by video cameras. The NYPD had taken the bleached flags down not long before the noon hour.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams declared that if the event with the flags were done as a joke, he did not find it amusing. The community safety of New York City is of supreme importance, especially bridges and landmarks that have already been listed as high risk targets. The public’s safety is of upmost importance to everyone, at any time.
