The View on ABC is solidifying its cast lineup, with the choice of Rosie O’Donnell as a co-host a controversial one. Former co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck and real estate tycoon Donald Trump are two of the many conservative voices who have been critical of O’Donnell’s being a co-host of The View. Joy Behar is one of the many people who support the selection of O’Donnell. To read an article expressing Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s perspective on the matter, click here.
Donald Trump has voiced his opinions about ABC’s choice of hiring Rosie O’Donnell to co-host The View with Whoopi Goldberg in a more measured manner than did Hasselbeck, when she called into the Fox & Friends morning TV program, which she is a co-host of, while on her stay-at-home- vacation on Wednesday. Trump did not suggest that there was a conspiracy behind her hiring, in planning since the creator of The View, Barbara Walters,’ farewell show, as did Hasselbeck.
Instead, “The Donald,” as he is often called, told Confidenti@l that he actually thought ABC’s hiring of Rosie O’Donnell to co-host The View was a “great move.” However, he then clarified his words of seeming praise, before the Confidenti@l reporter got the mistaken impression that he had suddenly been transformed into an O’Donnell fan, by saying that “it’ll have a short term positive impact, but then you have the long term. Rosie always self-destructs.”
Trump added other comments about Rosie O’Donnell that were less-than-complimentary, such as saying that O’Donnell’s “show on OWN was a catastrophe,” and that “Barbara (Walters) hates her.” He also stated that he thinks ABC will call him soon inviting him to come back on The View when O’Donnell begins her co-hosting stint in September.
Donald Trump has been a guest on The View many times in the past. Trump referred to Barbara Walters as “a dear friend.” According to him, “I’m the first one they’ll think of” to be a guest on the show upon O’Donnell’s much-anticipated return in the fall.
The often controversial Rosie O’Donnell has not directly responded to the critical comments of Donald Trump about her being hired by ABC to co-host The View. She did, though, post to Instagram a video or herself with her daughter, Vivian, in her lap. Both of them said into the camera the catchphrase that is often said at the show’s conclusion, “Take some time to enjoy ‘The View.'”
Rosie O’Donnell did respond to Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s comments, in brief, on Thursday. O’Donnell called Hasselbeck’s comments “shocking.” She added, in reference to her former co-host’s remark about her spitting in the faces of U.S. servicemen, a question wondering if Hasselbeck “has donated any money to the armed services.”
O’Donnell reportedly has had a stipulation included in her year-long contract to have at least some sort of say in who will be hired as the third co-host of The View. Names of women who are well-known conservatives have started swirling around as a possible third co-host, like that of Sarah Palin. However, if O’Donnell does not believe she can get along well with Palin, or any other potential co-host, that might be an obstacle and would nix the idea of hiring the former vice presidential candidate.
Another conservative woman who is in contention to be the third co-host on The View on ABC is Meghan McCain, the daughter of Senator John McCain. She will be a guest host on The View this coming Monday, July 14. According to sources, her guest hosting duty will be, in essence, an audition to be the show’s third co-host.
Joy Behar, another former co-host of The View, referred to the comments that Elisabeth Hasselbeck phoned into Fox & Friends about the return of Rosie O’Donnell as being “below the belt.”
Despite ABC’s The View having some of its highest ratings when Rosie O’Donnell co-hosted the series from 2006-2007, she has drawn criticism from many people who are conservatives. To them, she is a controversial choice as a co-host of the show. Two recent examples of people who have been critical ABC’s decision to hire Rosie O’Donnell to be a co-host of The View are Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Donald Trump. The View‘s Twitter account mentioned on Thursday that it will be sharing more news, presumably about who the third co-host will be, “in the coming weeks.”
