Bad Notes in Music: Female Fights and Feuds

There have been two brewing battles this week in the music industry. On one side, a once-legendary rapper has made moves to properly diffuse the popularity of her young counterpart. On the other, a once-promising girl group has split indefinitely following an all-out brawl.

Nicki vs. the Queen Bee: Battle Lines Drawn – The bad blood between legendary hip-hop artist, Lil’ Kim, and the young rapstress that many have compared her to, Nicki Minaj, is still boiling. On Saturday, August 2, Kim released a diss verse over the remixed track to Flawless, in which Minaj assists the main vocalist, R&B diva Beyoncé. Kim still had more to add and on Wednesday, August 6, she followed that up with another vocal attack called Identity Theft.

However, things have now reached an all-out fever pitch. On Friday, August 8, it was revealed that Kim picked up some powerful ammo along the way, Nicki’s other musical rival, rapper Iggy Azalea. The Fancy performer and Minaj have gone head to head recently due to comments from Minaj that have questioned Azalea’s authenticity in hip-hop.

During an interview on Hot 97, rapper T.I., who is Azalea’s mentor, revealed that Kim reached out to him in hopes of setting up a collaboration between her and the young Australian diva.

“I got a call from Kim,” he stated. “It’s time to [get] that record done. In the game of chess, you must think five moves ahead.” Nicki Minaj has yet to comment. She recently holds the top two positions on the iTunes music chart.

Showstopper: Danity Kane is Done – The reunion of early 2000’s girl group, Danity Kane, seemed to be marred in controversy from the get-go. For starters, original member D. Woods was suspiciously left out of the girls’ comeback. Woods would later state that she had no knowledge of the planned reunion. On top of this, another member, Aundrea Fimbres, suddenly departed the newly minted foursome earlier in 2014. According to Fimbres, she was ready to leave the stage behind in order to begin a family with her new fiancé. Considering the news came out of left field, things did not seem to be starting very well.

However, things have gone from bad to worse with the remaining trio; Aubrey O’Day, Shannon Bex and Dawn Richard, deciding to permanently break apart. According to many reports, things came to a violent end earlier in the week, when O’Day, age 30, and Richard, 31, got into a heated altercation that turned physical.

Sources connected to the girls, who originally formed on MTV’s Making the Band 3, say that O’Day and Bex had been meeting in secret, without Richard’s knowledge, to discuss music deals and the future of Danity Kane’s music. Richard would eventually catch them in the act on Monday, August 8. The argument escalated to the point insiders say Richard attacked O’Day by punching her in the face. Law enforcement officers were called and O’Day planned to press charges.

In 2009, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, who originally brought the group together, decided to release four of Danity Kane’s members from their contracts, O’ Day, Fimbres, Bex and Woods. During a reunion episode of Making the Band, where Fimbres chose not to show up at the last minute, he expressed that he would only put them back together if all five original members were on board. Songs that were recorded for an album to be released in 2014 may now never see the light of day.
