Beyoncé made her presence felt at the 2014 MTV VMAs. The superstar songstress did not attend the function to simply accept her Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award but she also came to remind viewers of the world-class entertainer she truly is. After receiving the coveted lifetime achievement award rededicated in Jackson’s name after 1991, Beyoncé closed the VMAs with her own 15 minute mini-concert. However, another star also caught the eyes of many last night, as the often controversial Nicki Minaj was a force to be reckoned with. However, the biggest surprise of the 2014 VMAs may have come behind the scenes. Beyoncé acknowledged Nicki Minaj’s overall package when she certified the rapper/singer’s stardom by presenting her with a necklace engraved with the word “Flawless,” backstage.
Minaj took to Instagram to announce how ecstatic she was about receiving the gift from Beyoncé. “If Beyoncé didn’t walk into your dressing room and give you a diamond “flawless” necklace, then there’s no way you could be having a better week than me.” Minaj then went on the thank Queen Bey for her tremendous influence and power, not just in the music industry, but also for women around the world. The 31-year-old diva finished her note with “#WeFlawless.” A photo of the diamond studded necklace was posted on the social media application by Minaj as well.
Flawless is a heavy trap influenced track on Beyonce’s self titled album. The 32-year-old singer explores the topic of feminism and female empowerment in the original song’s lyrics. The track also features a heavy sample of Beyonce’s Bow Down/ I Been On. Despite not being released as a single, the catchy tune managed to chart on both the new Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 and the Hot R&B/ Hip Hop Songs charts. The unexpected success of the 17-time Grammy winner’s original single led to a remix which features Minaj. The Flawless remix was released to U.S radio on Aug 12 and subsequently delayed the release of the Harajuku Barbie’s single, titled Anaconda.
The road to certified flawless was not nearly as easy for Nicki Minaj as it was for Beyoncé at the 2014 VMAs. The voluptuous rapper was all over the stage in more ways than one. After performing her new sexually charged single Anaconda, a simple wardrobe change wound up causing a stir during the performance of Bang Bang with Jessie J and Ariana Grande. An apparent wardrobe malfunction was evident during Minaj’s performance.
The outspoken hip hop artist was seen holding her dress rather awkwardly throughout the song as she rapped her verse. According to Minaj, she did not have enough time to zip up her dress before coming out to rap her verse. As a result the star was just thankful that her nipple did not come out on national television, similar to the way it did during her Good Morning America appearance in 2012. Skeptics believe that there is high possibility that the scene was stage. An anonymous source that reportedly attended VMA rehearsals, claims that the Jamaica, Queens native performed holding her dress while unzipped earlier on Sunday.
Minaj also took the stage alongside R&B superstar, Usher for their single She Came to Give it to You at Sunday night’s award show. Beyoncé, received her Video Vanguard Award from her husband, Jay-Z while he held their daughter Blue Ivy. Despite not taking home any individual awards, Nicki Minaj appeared more than content with Beyoncé labeling her as certified flawless, while backstage after the 2014 VMAs. Music fans may be witnessing just the beginning of the dynamic duo’s collaborations.
