A California couple passed away just hours apart from one other after 62 years of marriage. Don and Maxine Simpson were together for that amount of time and they were not going to even allow death to keep them away from each other for very long.
The couple’s granddaughter, Melissa Sloan, stated that her grandparents of Bakersfield passed away about four hours apart on July 21. Maxine, age 87, was suffering from bladder cancer, while Don, age 90 had fought Alzheimer’s disease and also endured pneumonia and a broken hip the week before his death.
The pair resided in the city of Bakersfield since the early 1950’s, even though neither one had been natives of the state of California. They were introduced to each other by common friends at a local bowling alley and were never apart after that after Don was able to ask Maxine out for a date. At the bowling alley he forgot to get her number and had to later drive to her home to actually ask her out for a date. He ended up proposing to Maxine six months later, and they were joined in marriage in 1952.
After they were wed, the couple journeyed to Germany, where Don was employed as a civil engineer for the United States Army. While they were there, the pair ended up adopting twin boys, age 18 months, from a German orphanage before they came back to the United States. Their sons were named William and James. When they got back to California, Don starting running his own engineering firm and Maxine became a nurse.
In the early part of June of this year, the sickly couple moved in with Sloan so they could be closer to their family. Don had went into the hospital to receive medical treatment for both his shattered hip and pneumonia, but Melissa had her grandfather brought back to her home on July 19, and put his hospital bed next to Maxine’s.
Maxine ended up dying at 7 a.m. on July 21. It was around 10 a.m. when her body was being removed from the bedroom that Sloan happened to take note of Don’s breathing. It was starting to become labored and within an hour he was also dead as well. They passed away within four hours of each other. Melissa stated that her grandparents were holding hands as they were dying and that “when her body left the room his soul left with her.”
The couple not only travelled, they also were active with local organizations such as the Rotary Club. Melissa explained that all through their years of marriage, the pair stayed inseparable. She stated that all her grandfather wanted was to be with his beautiful wife. He adored her, loved her to the end of the Earth and wanted to always be with her.
That is what happened as well. Don and Maxine Simpson passed away just hours apart from one other after 62 years of marriage. The couple was married for that amount of time and they were not going to even allow death to keep them away from each other for very long.
