Charlie Sheen stepped up and did the ALS ice bucket challenge, however, he did it his own way, without ice and without water, although he did have a bucket. The ALS ice bucket challenge has gone viral, however many are not donating money, much less even mentioning the debilitating disease for which this was started. The Anger Management star made sure everyone knew what he was doing and why, and is that not the point of challenge in the first place? Bill Gates made a rig to dump the water, and Jennifer Lopez had her kids involved in her completion of the challenge, all clever and cute, but neither pledged to help monetarily. Although the stars and Hollywood elite are making sure that fans are aware of what they are doing and why, unfortunately there are many more people out there that are just using this as a chance to get in on the newest viral sensation.
Lou Gehrig disease or ALS is a debilitating disease that affects the spine and the muscles while leaving the patient’s mind intact. It is a painful disease to live with, and it is hard on the families who have a perfectly cognizant family member whose body is slowly breaking down. Many are saying that Sheen’s display is not what the challenge is about, but if it is not about donating money for research, then what is it for? The actor is donating $10,000 to ALS and challenged his former co-star John Crier and his replacement on Two and a Half Men, Ashton Kutcher to do the challenge exactly as he did.
The foundation for ALS research stated that last year at this time they had raised 1.7 million dollars, and because of this challenge going viral, they have reached 13.3 million dollars. Those that scoff would do well to look at the numbers, and know that the challenge is actually raising awareness along with a good chunk of money. If Sheen and his three nominee’s all donate $10,000 that is another $30,000 to add for research and development of a cure. That is more than most are doing as the fans see celebrities dousing themselves in ice water, but few of them stating what, if anything, they are donating to the cause.
No matter what Sheen does there will be controversy surrounding it, and although he did not dump a bucket of ice water over his head, he took the challenge to the next level, and still there are haters. Some say he called out people involved in the Two and a Half Men show because he is bitter, but watching the video there seems to be nothing mean or bitter about this at all. How can one be bitter over a show that is no longer being made? Some are upset simply because he did not dump ice water on his head while still others state that Sheen did what all of Hollywood should have done which was to donate money. The video below is what all the controversy is about, and the fans will undoubtedly voice their opinions as they have been doing since this hit the web.
