J.J. Murphy has died just four days after beginning to film scenes for the highly popular television series, Game of Thrones. J.J. Murphy was an 86-year-old veteran from Northern Ireland and also had a role in the new film directed by Gary Shore, Dracula Untold. Murphy has died at the age of 86 on Friday, Aug. 8th.
The Irish veteran actor had told friends that he was very much excited to be part of Game of Thrones which is currently in its 5th season of filming in Northern Ireland. Murphy was just hired a little over a month ago to play the oldest representative of the Night’s Watch, Ser Denys Mallister. Murphy had already completed four days of filming scenes and had even more days scheduled for shooting. The actor said to friends that Murphy was very excited to be a part of the “biggest productions” in the world at this point in his long career.
In a statement released by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss of Game of Thrones said, “We will not be recasting J.J. Murphy.” The writers continued to say that Murphy was a wonderful man and that Murphy was the greatest Denys Mallister that either of them could have asked for. Benioff’s and Weiss’s statement ended with, “And now his watch ended.” The statement may suggest that the writers will have to rewrite scenes to include the character’s death scene which should be no trouble at all considering the amount of death scenes that have been shot up to date.
In 1948, the Irish actor trained at the Ulster Group Theatre School. Known for his work in theater, J.J. Murphy spent most of his career in Belfast at the Lyric Theater, the same place that gave the world Ciaran Hinds and Liam Neeson. The 86-year-old actor also appeared in Angela’s Ashes, Cal and Mickybo and Me and was also to appear as a village elder in Dracula Untold which is also being filmed in Northern Ireland.
Recently at Comic Con, season five’s new cast was announced for Game of Thrones which also included Jonathan Pryce, Keisha Castle-Hughes and Obara Sand. Pryce is to play The High Sparrow and Castle-Hughes is to play the daughter of Prince Oberyn Martell.
Dracula Untold was originally slated for release in August but now the release date has been moved to October. Fans of Murphy will be sure to catch the long time actor play one of his final roles for the big screen. The cast of Dracula Untold also includes Luke Evans, Sarah Gadon, Dominic Cooper and Samantha Barks.
J.J. Murphy, the 86-year-old actor from Northern Ireland has died on Friday, Aug. 8. The actor was still working strong and showed no signs of leaving this earth any time soon, with his upcoming roles in blockbuster films like Dracula Untold, no one could be sure what else Murphy could have had on the horizon. Though Murphy may not have finished completing all his scenes for Game of Thrones season 5, Murphy was certainly excited and proud to be a part of the mega hit TV series.
