In Tunisia, Strange Body of Water Seems to Have Appeared Straight out of Earth

In Tunisia, a strange body of water, which eyewitnesses have estimated covers a region of nearly three acres and measures over 50 feet at its deepest point, seems to have appeared straight out of the Earth. While researchers investigate how the lake formed, they still have no idea as to where the source of the water came from.

However the running theory at the present time is that some sort of tremor splintered a layer of rock that was holding an underground basin, according to French media reports. The water then would have streamed through a fissure in the stone and filled the chasm over a period of time.

When the lake was discovered previously this month, visitors were warned about swimming in the new beach, which had become known as Gafsa. This was because public safety officials have yet to confirm the safety of the enigmatic body of water. Many ventured that the lake might be dangerous to humans or even carcinogenic because there is phosphate mining in the area. However the warning did not stop the residents from reveling in their brand-new beach because it showed up in the middle of a long, dry, hot summer.

The belief that a tremor broke some sort of natural dam is just a theory at the present time. It has its basis more on the lack of any other dependable explanations.

Similar to the Siberian holes, the precise period of the lake’s formation is unknown, due to the fact that this part of southern Tunisia is so sporadically populated. It is possible the lake might have been there for weeks or even months without being observed. It supposedly came to the attention of resident shepherds about three weeks ago but only went into the international media in the last couple of days.

The public officials do not believe it has been there long because the water, when first noticed, was a sparkling, clear blue. However it has now turned to a murky green color and contains algae. That has not stopped people from flocking to the water. It Is believed that over 600 individuals have went to the water, where they have swam, scuba dived, paddled, jumped off rocks and just relaxed in the sun.

French journalist Lakhdar Souid told the media that some believe it is some sort of miracle, while others think that it is a curse. It is thought that the algae could be poisonous because it may have become radioactive from adjoining phosphate mines.

Phosphate deposits often happen in combination with thorium and uranium, which might be let loose into underground water by mining. The change of color from pure blue to cloudy green has not helped to alleviate any fears.
