Joan Rivers was allegedly taken to a hospital early Thursday after she reportedly quit breathing during a surgical procedure at a New York City medical center. The comedian and TV personality, age 81, who is almost as well known for having had numerous cosmetic surgeries, was having a procedure done at the Yorkville Endoscopy clinic located on East 93rd Street.
Paramedics received an emergency call to that address at about 9:40 a.m. about a person who was either in respiratory or cardiac arrest. Information that was released soon after stated the Rivers was rushed to the Mount Sinai Medical Center, where she was at first listed in critical condition.
Rivers had recorded a post-Emmys Fashion Police special on Tuesday and also made several appearances around New York on Wednesday promoting her new book Diary of a Mad Diva.
It was also reported that her daughter Melissa Rivers, age 46, and Melissa’s son Edgar, age 13, were seen at the Los Angeles International Airport early on Thursday morning catching a flight to New York City.
It was also stated by several media sources that they were able to confirm that Joan Rivers was indeed rushed to Mt. Sinai hospital and her daughter Melissa was in route to be by her side.
Rivers was reportedly having some sort of throat surgery at the New York City clinic when the event occurred. A spokesperson for the New York City Police Department told various news outlets that an 81 year old woman had been moved by paramedic transport from a medical office on East 93rd street to Mount Sinai in critical condition but the spokesperson did not reveal any names.
Rivers’ manager and publicist have not yet given official comments but various anonymous sources are stating she is now in stable but critical condition and that she suffered a heart attack.
Joan Rivers has always been known for being an unapologetic comic, making jokes at the expense of other celebrities and about her own appearance. She most recently hit the headlines when she slammed backers of Palestinians involved in the Israel and Palestine clash happening in Gaza. Before this occurred, she stormed out of a media interview after the commentator asked her about the fur coat she had on on the cover of her new Mad Diva book. It is the tenth she has had published.
Rivers shot to fame back in 1965 when she became one of Johnny Carson’s recurrent guests on The Tonight Show. However the pair’s connection was destroyed when she launched her own rival late-night television program The Late Show in 1986. When that did not work out, she went on to have a daytime talk show which was called The Joan Rivers Show. It ended up earning her a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host in 1989 and was nominated for numerous other Emmys until it concluded its run in 1993.
Rivers has also appeared in many comedy specials, had her career narrated in a 2010 documentary called Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, and presently stars in a television reality series with Melissa.
