Doctor Strange is a highly peculiar Marvel hero who has been buzzing around the media lately after news a live action movie was released. Rumors have been confirmed that Joaquin Phoenix is in the final process of taking on the role of the Doctor turned wizard in Marvel’s upcoming film.
Although Joaquin Phoenix has not yet signed on for the role, he sits on top of Marvel’s list of potential leading men. The three-time Oscar nominee is praised for his emotional and intense acting, making him a perfect fit for the luminous hero. He was highly regarded for his role as Johnny Cash in 2005’s Walk the Line, and has recently made headlines with his performance in Spike Jonze’s Oscar winning movie Her in 2013.
For those unfamiliar with the character of Doctor Strange, he is the 1960’s creation of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, officially named Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange. Once a brilliant but arrogant neurosurgeon, his hands were crushed in a car accident, leaving him unable to perform surgery. On a worldwide search for alternative remedies, he comes to the aid of and eventually becomes the apprentice of a mystical old man named the Ancient One. With his guidance he learns and masters the mystical arts.
It is still too soon to say exactly who Disney will incorporate in the story, but there are a few top characters from the comic who are likely suspects. After perfecting his magic abilities, he is joined by side kick and martial arts master, Wong, and sorceress and eventual lover, Clea. Throughout the series he deals with a number of villains, the most notorious being Dormammu , the fiery lord of the Dark Dimension, and his henchmen.
Receiving less buzz than the potential signing of Phoenix is the news that Scott Derrickson will be directing the film. The writer/director is known for his work with horror and thriller movies, which makes him an interesting choice for a PG-13 action adventure Disney movie. However, the Doctor Strange series has always been much darker toned, filled with magic and demons ranging across different dimensions filled with unknown evils. This in mind, a director with experience turning monsters to life could fit the shoe perfectly.
Rumors of who will score the lead in Doctor Strange have ranged from Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, to Boardwalk Empire’s Jack Huston. Unlike jokers like Spiderman and Iron Man, such a serious Marvel hero deserves a serious actor like Joaquin Phoenix. The 39-year-old actor of Puerto Rican descent has been working since the 80’s, and has yet to wear a cape on screen. He has built a reputation to be a somewhat difficult actor to work with, but a few minor lash outs on set does little to alter the anticipation of seeing him fill this role.
Doctor Strange is set to be released in July of 2016, under Marvel Studios. With Joaquin Phoenix in the final processes of taking the role, the film flocks an excited audience to its release still in the distance future.
