The self-proclaimed mistress of all evil, Maleficent, is set to become a playable character in a new video game by Disney Interactive. Maleficent is Disney’s most famous villain who first appeared in Walt Disney’s classic animated film, Sleeping Beauty, in 1959.
Disney Infinity is the video game/toy hybrid that has sold well over 3 million units since its release in August of 2013. Disney Interactive has announced the unique title’s sequel, Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes, which will include playable characters and worlds from the Marvel Universe in addition to classic Disney faces. After the successful reception of Disney’s live-action feature film, Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie, it seemed perfectly adequate to add the dark faerie to the cast of characters featured in the second installment.
Each playable character in Disney Infinity comes with its own signature vinyl figure; the figure is actually how players put their characters into the game. The vinyl figure must be placed on the Infinity base that connects to the gaming console. Once the character is positioned on the base, it appears on the screen so players can take control of them immediately. Characters can be swapped in and out as much as one’s heart desires. The only restriction lies within the franchise-themed play sets that are part of the game. The play sets are various types of mission-based worlds all featured within a single universe, such as Pirates of the Carribbean, Monsters University and The Avengers or Spider-Man. Only characters from the specified franchise are playable in the play set.
The real creativity comes when players access the Toy Box mode, where every single character, weapon, building and more can be blended together without limitations – hence the “Infinity.” Maleficent is not partial to any play set and is made specifically for the Toy Box. Disney Interactive has released a number of trailers featuring Maleficent that showcase all of her in-game abilities. The sorceress is anticipated to be one of the most powerful characters available in the game, with skills that include copious amounts of dark magic attacks, summoning a flock of ravens to do her bidding and even bringing forth a wall of thorns to defeat her enemies. An episode of the popular YouTube channel, CoinOpTV, features in-game footage of Maleficent with a highlight being the reveal of Maleficent’s mighty wings which she can use to fly openly around the world within the game – staying true to the live-action film.
Fans of the Infinity video game seem to be on the edge of their seats waiting for Maleficent to become a playable character. Although the starter pack for the 2.0 edition of Disney Infinity is scheduled for release on September 23, it looks like fanatics of this horned villainess will not be able to get their hands on her until November 4. Disney Interactive has chosen to make only its brand new Marvel characters and play sets available at launch. A second starter pack that centers around the Toy Box mode and features strictly Disney characters will be released on November 4, alongside the Maleficent figure as well as a few other original Disney characters like Aladdin, Tinker Bell and Donald Duck.
Although each of the figures in the game are familiar characters a great many people will know and love, they all have a slightly different twist on them that makes each character feel new again. The theme of Disney Infinity centers around the idea that all of these characters are inside a giant “toy box” that can be molded and created however one pleases. The characters have a very specific design that stays true to the faces everyone recognizes, but creates the illusion that they, themselves, are toys – a rather creative move on Disney Interactive’s part. Since the Maleficent figure favors that of the new live-action film version, Angelina Jolie was part of the approval process for the dark mage’s vinyl figure, since Jolie had a large part in creating the look of the character she portrayed in the film.
As the prolonged wait for Maleficent to become a playable video game character continues, the hype for Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes will continue to grow. From the looks of what the latest installment has to offer, one can anticipate that Infinity 2.0 will acquire all the success of 1.0 and more.
