In the midst of all of the news surrounding celebrity break-ups and make-ups it seems Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, who are known for their annual vow-renewal ceremonies, are indeed headed for divorce. Carey, the 44-year-old Grammy Award winning singer, and her nearly ex-husband the 33-year-old Wild-N-Out host joined their lives in marriage on April 30, 2008 in the Bahamas. The two have been living separately since May 2014 and with Nick’s only contact being his children.
The couple married only weeks after they started dating but did not welcome their twins, Moroccan and Monroe, until three years later. Nick and Mariah have celebrated their love by renewing their marriage nuptials every year. In 2009 their ceremony was held in the Maldives, 2010 at their home in Beverly Hills, 2011 Mariah had just given birth so they “rejoined” at the hospital, 2012 they renewed at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and in 2013 they celebrated another year together in Disneyland.
Nick has confirmed the two have been living apart for months and “There is trouble in paradise.” The couples’ Bel-Air mansion is up for sale with an asking price of $12,995 million. Nick and Mariah have both stated their main concern right now is the well-being of their children, Moroccan and Monroe.
As with most celebrity splits, rumors surfaced with claims that Nick was cheating on Mariah. A source close to them said those rumors are a lie because he would not do that to her. Nick chased his bride for years and could hardly believe it once he finally got her. The source said Nick was floored that she had given him a shot.
Mariah’s story seems to differ. Reportedly she hired a bodyguard to follow her husband around Las Vegas to keep girls away from him. Mariah also barred Nick from drinking because she felt alcohol tended to get him in trouble. Ironically both celebrities shut down the divorce rumors earlier this year.
TMZ’s sources stated the beginning of the end for the Cannon-Carey team was in March after Nick’s appearance on Big Boy’s radio show. During his interview Nick was asked to name the five celebrities he had slept with; he named five different women but the one that set off his wife was Kim Kardashian. Reportedly, Mariah felt humiliated and tore into Nick for weeks. Their relationship never recovered.
To make matters worse, Nick was on the Howard Stern show and said his wife did not give up the goods before they got married and sources said this sent Mariah over the edge. Sources said, although they do not need the money, Mariah feels Nick takes every gig that comes his way and as a result has abandoned her and the kids.
Nick said while his wife harasses him about his work ethic the America’s Got Talent host has generated $75 million for his family since 2011. He also said Mariah is surrounded with “yes men” and cannot handle it whenever he dares to disagree with her.
Although Nick has said that he walked out on the marriage he has not admitted to abandoning his wife or children as a result of work. The celebrity host claimed he is very concerned about his wife’s emotional state and feels it is better for the children if the marriage ends. The environment around Mariah is toxic, according to Nick, and he is very worried about the twins growing up in that type of atmosphere.
Mariah’s rep refused to comment on the singer’s personal life but said that she is focusing on her upcoming tour and her two children. Another source said there is no question about Nick’s love for his bride. He had the biggest crush on her, she was his everything. Now that the two are split “things are extremely dark.”
After six years of marriage and the birth of their twins, Nick and Mariah are reportedly headed to divorce. Since the couple wed they have renewed their vows yearly with the exception of 2014. According to the gossip site TMZ, the high-powered couple has already gotten lawyers involved to negotiate property and custody agreements over their 3-year-old twins. Nick confirmed he has not lived with his wife since May of this year and stated, “There is trouble in paradise.”
