Real Madrid dominated Sevilla to the tune of 2-0 in the UEFA Super Cup in Cardiff City. The Super Cup puts the previous year’s winners of both the Champions League and Europa League against one another, which created an all-Spanish tie this time around. Both goals came from Madrid’s superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, as he looked very lively and willing to go forward all night. The Champions League holders debuted their two new big signings, Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, in the midfield.
Much of the first half was dominated by Real with the only goal in the half coming from Ronaldo in the 30th minute. Early on, the pace and possession were completely dominated by the Madrid side, whose new look midfield of Kroos, Luka Modric and Rodriguez was working well. The first chance came from Ronaldo, whose long-range effort barely challenged the keeper, but it was a sign of things to come because Madrid would continue to challenge in front of goal. In the 13th minute, Ronaldo getting fouled right at the top left of the box led to a nicely positioned free kick that the Portugese man fired just over the bar. Sevilla consistently had no answers for the Madrid attack and their only spells of possession were sorted out quickly.
The Real Madrid breakthrough came in the 30th minute and was built from a great piece of counter-attacking play. Ronaldo found the ball on the right flank and put a great pass into the center of the field, leaving him wide open to roam down the right wing. Bale picked up the ball and bombarded down the left, eventually sending in a beautiful cross to find Ronaldo at the back post to finish it off for the match’s first goal. The only challenge from Sevilla came in the 34th minute when the defense broke down and Casillas was forced to make a quick save right in front. Overall, the first half was comfortably dominated by Madrid even if the score line was only 1-0.
The second half started off much the same as the first with Real Madrid dominating both the pace and possession. Early on, Ronaldo was able to double both his and Madrid’s tally as he finished off a great pass from Karim Benzema with a powerful left-footed strike. Sevilla’s goalie was able to get a finger to it but the shot was too powerful and well-placed. Real was almost able to add another in the 64th through Benzema after some stylish build-up from Rodriguez and Ronaldo set up the Frenchman, whose shot was saved. The best chances for a goal in the second half for Sevilla came just before the end of the match, with one shot forcing a good save from Casillas, and another shot that barely missed wide after a corner. The final chance of the match came from Gareth Bale, who tortured Sevilla all night with his pace. After a great run it took a nice save to keep out a very powerful shot.
The first trophy of the season for Real Madrid came in their very first competitive match of the new season as they defeated Sevilla 2-0 to win the UEFA Super Cup. Madrid will be very happy about the performances of their two stars, Bale and Ronaldo, as well as their new big money signings, Kroos and Rodriguez. Sevilla was overmatched all night and will have to improve greatly if they want to challenge the Spanish powers of Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico.
