The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) was a spectacular show and the grand finale had Beyonce proving that she was, indeed, the Queen. Amidst all the marriage rumors of Beyonce and husband, Jay Z possibly splitting up, the Flawless singer took the stage and was just that, Flawless.
The week before the VMAs aired, everyone was wondering if Jay Z was even going to attend the award show to support his wife who ended the show with an explosive and emotional medley. Jay Z not only attended but sat proudly in the audience with daughter, Blue Ivy on his lap.
Beyonce took to the stage wearing a reflective body suit in a myriad of colors that resembled a beautiful piece of stained glass art. The costume choice was perfect as it also reflected the performance which also was art in its own right.
Queen Bee began the VMAs performance with Mine, a reflective ballad on relationships and the journey continued as Beyonce mixed in the songs Haunted, No Angel and Jealous. For all of Beyonce’s fans, the songs hit home as the lyrics could define what the singer is going through now in the media with all the hype on her and Jay Z’s marriage status. The solidarity the Carters are used to showing was there in full view last night as the Jay Z and Blue Ivy watched wife and mother give the performance of a lifetime.
Beyonce is known for her excellent entertaining skills, to name just one, and she delivered in spades. The performance started to pick up the tempo when Beyonce started singing Blow. The audience was all enjoying the mini concert and Katy Perry was seen dancing in her seat and singing the lyrics, “Turn that cherry out.”
Beyonce also sang a bit of Drunk in Love and with the dancers surrounding her on stage was one of the more provocative moments. That, and when Beyonce’s silhouette moved across a divan like a seductive, sexy panther. Beyonce’s performance was pure excellence.
The medley also included Rocket and Partition and by this point there was barely a still body in the place. As usual, Taylor Swift and Lorde were having the time of their lives.
Things started to get political when words started to flash in the backdrop; words from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, speaking of how the world raise women to succeed but not to succeed too much in fear of threatening the man.
Attacking all angles of media exposure, Beyonce also includes the line referring to the elevator fight between Jay Z and sister, Solange Knowles while doing a bit of Flawless. Beyonce proved not only to be the Queen of the VMAs but also that the singer was fearless. Not afraid to touch upon the topics everyone is talking about and that the family was there together, spoke volumes.
Beyonce ended the segment with Blue as the backdrop played family photos. After the amazing act, it was time for Beyonce to accept the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award which was presented to her by none other than Jay Z and Blue Ivy themselves. Beyonce was in tears as she accepted the speech as daughter Blue clapped and kept saying, “Yeah mommy.” It was so cute and comforting to see the three of them on stage together during a very touching moment.
The VMAs show was quite the extravaganza and the finale certainly proved that Beyonce is the Queen no matter what is being said about her in the tabloids. The performance was as if the audience got to be at a Beyonce concert for free and everyone loved it as the Flawless singer brought the house down.
