The Ice Bucket Challenge has been making its rounds through the celebrity lists lately, and now it has hit the WWE. The latest celebrity to be challenged is WWE’s COO Triple H, who gladly takes on the ice bucket challenge. He received the challenge from Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. In the video, not only does he encourage those watching to donate to ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), he also challenges Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin, and his father-in-law, Vince McMahon. It is clear he did not wimp out as the bucket has plenty of ice.
ALS, also known as Lou Gerhig’s disease, is a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells especially in the brain and spine. It is a devastating disease that at this time has no known cure, while there are some new clinical trials, it is still a long road to finding a cure. This ice bucket challenge just shows a few seconds of what someone with this disease goes through. Not only is this challenge a fun way to spread awareness, but it has spread it in the fastest way possible in this day and age as a viral video. The point of the video is not only to spread awareness, but to bring in the much-needed donations for not only fighting the disease, but research as well.
Various ALS charities from all over the country are seeing increased donations from these challenges. The national ALS Association has seen $2.3 million in donations since July 29, a stark difference from the $25,000 the association received in donations during the same time period last year.
There are critics claiming that celebrities are only doing the ice bucket challenge to promote themselves, but for those affected by this disease, it is a beacon of hope that these viral videos will help achieve more donations, so hopefully a cure can be found sooner rather than later. The WWE COO may not be the first to take the ice bucket challenge, but it is certain that this video challenge will not be ending anytime soon. In every video, they have to name three people that they would like to take the ice bucket challenge.
The ice bucket challenge is also being performed all over YouTube by everyday individuals from all over the world. For information regarding this disease and stories of those affected by ALS, visit ALS.org. Many have already donated, but research for diseases is not cheap and they will need everyone’s continued support. While some are still living with this disease, other families are mourning the loss of a family member because of this disease. While WWE COO Triple H is taking the ice bucket challenge, it will take more than just a handful of celebrities in order to achieve a cure. It seems that there will be many WWE stars taking this challenge in the near future.
