Gamers around the world rejoiced at the news that Mortal Kombat X was no longer a myth, but a game in full development this past month. The long-awaited sequel to the award-winning, phenomenal 2011 reboot is well on its way to hitting a gamer’s console. With the unveiling of the trailer, the game was well on its way to being another success for Netherrealm studios but the details were still shrouded in mystery. Following the launch of the playable demonstration, players got sneak peek at the returning and new characters. Of course, Scorpion and Sub-Zero made an appearance but the other roster was all new. This week, fans get a nice easter egg from the creators of the bloody franchise with the release of a trailer for another playable, familiar character.
Joining the roster of new playable characters is one of the originals and most iconic, Raiden. The fictional thunder-god gets the high-definition treatment and makes a surprise return to the Mortal Kombat franchise. Revealed during EVO 2014 with a slightly new look, new moves, and fighting styles to keep the introduction a little more stimulating and entertaining, the iconic character gets a modernized change. The quick-moving, conical hat sporting fighter switches from weapons to three new fighting styles and high-definition animation powered by the Unreal engine. As one of the original fighters of the franchise, the return of Raiden made way for the announcement of yet another veteran to the game.
Fortunately for those that remembered the debut of the first Mortal Kombat fighting game almost 20 years ago, another familiar fighter makes his return for a new generation. Already featured in the Mortal Kombat cartoon, TV series, movie, and several of the fighting games, Kano and Goro get a remodeling in high-definition too. The android mercenary and fan-favorite Kano makes his triumphant return with a few new alterations. Although little is known about the full story for the upcoming cross-generation fighting game, Kano will also be undergoing three new fighting style changes-commando, cybernetic, and cutthroat. Each style is equipped with a new look and a different set of moves. Marked with the changing color on his cybernetic eye and heart, this new Kano still holds some of his classic appeal.
With the news of two new/old characters for the new roster, Mortal Kombat X is set to be Netherrealm’s most ambition addition to the series yet. Along with the return of some fan-favorites, the sequel will feature brand new characters, new fighting styles, new fatalities, and a new fighting engine. Raiden and Kano are joined by an insect queen named D’Vorah, the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade named Cassie Cage, a fighting duo Ferra/Torr, and the new emperor of Outworld named Kotal Kahn. Each character comes with three different variations of fighting styles with their own unique attributes and qualities. Some fighting styles are more combo-focused, along for ten or more move chains and some styles are more focused on special moves. The main villain/boss of the game has yet to be revealed but the creator Ed Boon stated that it was a surprising returning character.
Although many of the details are shrouded in mystery, the excitement is already building and Mortal Kombat X is proving to be one of the best in the game’s franchises. The reveal of Raiden and Kano keeps old fans happy, while still modernizes them for a new generation. More should be revealed as the 2015 game release date draws closer but, for now, fans will have to wet their appetites with teaser trailers and gameplay footage.
