French video game developer Kobojo aims to create a touch-based, cross-platfrom, 2D RPG with the help of writer Kazushige Nojima, and composer Hitoshi Sakimoto, of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy fame. This epic fantasy has been described as “Final Fantasy meets Valkyrie Profile and Dragon’s Crown in a new online multiplayer experience.” Welcome to Zodiac.
Kobojo recently showed off their new project at the Tokyo Game Show. It is being developed in Dundee, Scotland at the new Kobojo studio. The story revolves around the zodiac signs and the 12 gods that represent them. However, these gods are not the only ones focused on the zodiac. The protagonist will be able to change classes on the fly between 12 different options, each class has a specific elemental affinity as well. Fans of turn based RPG’s will have something very hopeful to look forward to, take a look.
The artwork looks stellar, like something that feels inspired by Dragon’s Crown. Basiscape, responsible for the sound effects and audio of Dragon’s Crown is lending their help, founder Hitoshi Sakimoto is said to be the official composer. He will be working with scenario writer and former colleague, Kazushige Nojima. The two worked together on the Kingdom Hearts series, Final Fantasy Tactics and even Final Fantasy VII. These two are bringing with them an air of excellence that will hopefully propel Zodiac into the spotlight.
Many of the details revolving the completion of Zodiac are still up in the air. For instance, it is not currently know what devices it will come to or when that will be, 2015 is the ballpark estimate currently. So far, the game has only been seen on the PlayStation Vita and iPad but will likely come to other mobile devices as it is focuses on touch-screen devices. It is apparently still unknown if it will be free-to-play, but it will include multiplayer and allow friends to join your party. Many of the insights wanted in an RPG look like they are on their way into the game with the addition of more elements not usually found in such games.
Kobojo was created in 2008 with a focus on the casual and social game community. In 2013 they tried their hand at something different, the result, Mutants: Genetic Gladiators. The finished product was something that would change the direction of the company. Now, they have set their sights on creating an epic 2D cross-platform RPG with an emphasis on beautiful artwork and stunning music.
