One of the biggest blockbusters of the year, Guardians of the Galaxy, is set to play a large role in the upcoming video game, Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes. A selection of the film’s principal characters will become playable avatars complete with their own individual storyline in the game.
Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes is the sequel to 2013’s Disney Infinity, the popular video game and toy hybrid that has sold millions of units worldwide. The sequel will be an addition to Marvel’s universe now that Disney owns the rights to all things Marvel. The first game’s cast included characters derived solely from familiar Disney and Pixar films, whereas 2.0 will include more classic Disney figures as well as some of the most famous superheroes in the world.
The Guardians of the Galaxy cast is included in the aforementioned ensemble. The likes of Star-Lord, Groot, Gamora, Ronan the Accuser, Rocket Raccoon and Drax will be playable in 2.0. The realm of Guardians of the Galaxy will serve as a setting within the game, but only in a designated “play set.” A play set is a mode within a game that is based off of a specific franchise such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man or The Avengers, and provides the players with hours of free-roaming, mission-based gameplay – a similar set-up as the Tony Hawk video game series.
One of the most unique aspects of 2.0 is the method of getting the playable characters into the game. Each super hero or Disney icon involved in the game has its own vinyl figure that is sold individually for about $15 each. The figure is then placed on a base that immediately transports the character the figure represents into the game, becoming playable instantly.
The Disney Infinity 2.0 edition starter pack includes a The Avengers play set as well as an Iron Man, Thor and Black Widow figure. The Guardians of the Galaxy play set can be purchased separately and includes the Star-Lord and Gamora figures. Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Groot and Ronan will all be available as individual characters.
As Disney Infinity has proven that it can remain in touch with pop culture by featuring today’s most popular characters within the game, such as characters from Frozen, the multi-platform title continues to follow what is trending by featuring franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy, which has grossed over $586 million worldwide. Other new, trending titles featured in the game include that of Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent and The Amazing Spider-Man.
The Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes starter pack will release on September 23 alongside the Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy play sets. All announced Marvel characters are scheduled to be released on that date as well. The Disney Originals figures, which include iconic faces like Donald Duck, Stitch and Aladdin, will not be released until November 4. Disney Interactive will continue to announce and release more characters and play sets from both Disney and Marvel universes in 2015.
The Guardians of the Galaxy are to become playable video game characters in Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes this fall. The upcoming title will be available for Nintendo Wii U, PlayStation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC and iOS devices.
