Academy Award winning actor Jennifer Lawrence has a bevy of very successful films under her belt and is considered one of Hollywood’s leading film actors. Now, thanks to the remarkable financial success of the first two films in Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games franchise, Lawrence has broken a “celebrity record” and will be included in the Guinness World Records 2015 book as the action movie heroine with the highest grossing movies.
Currently The Hunger Games franchise has brought in more than $1.52 billion globally. On its own merit, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will also be included in the record book as the “post-apocalypse” movie that has generated the highest grossing box office receipts. As the second movie in The Hunger Games franchise, the movie brought in more than $420 million alone in the U.S. and more than $854 million globally.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the third installment of the Lionsgate franchise, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 that is set to open this fall on Nov. 21 and will likely continue the streak of record-breaking box office receipts. Although the book series, authored by Suzanne Collins on which the film franchise is based, was an actual trilogy, the film franchise has broken the third book into two parts. Thus, the final film in the franchise, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 will be released in the fall of 2015.
Although The Hunger Games movies generated much controversy because of the inherent and graphic teen-on-teen violence depicted in the films, most fans would argue that although the violence is grim, the message is one of survival not violence. Heroine Kat Everdeen is as complex as any character ever written and she struggles with the moral and practical weight of the actions that she, as champion for many, must take in order to survive. Most teenage girls and even adult women see Everdeen as a strong and positive role model, albeit in bizarre and violent circumstances, and it is the compelling story of her character, first expertly written by Collins and then expertly acted by Lawrence, that has created such an extensive and loyal fan base. These fans will return to the theaters with cash in hand this November and continue to support the record-breaking franchise.
Lawrence has not only brought Katniss Everdeen to life, she has acted in a multitude of other films that have not only thrilled the fans but also brought her extensive accolades for her acting chops. Lawrence won an Oscar for her 2013 role in Silver Linings Playbook, was nominated in 2014 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in American Hustle as well as for her role in 2013’s Winter’s Bone. She has also won two Golden Globe awards, a British Academy Film Award for American Hustle and numerous other nods.
As an actress Lawrence has shown great depth in not only her acting abilities but also in the roles she has chosen to play from a heroine in The Hunger Games franchise to the emotional depth displayed in Silver Linings Playbook and the creativity of her role as Raven and Mystique in the X-Men: Days of Future Past. Although she is currently being recognized in the Guinness World Records 2015 book as an action movie heroine, based upon her achievements to date, it can be predicted that Jennifer Lawrence is going to dominate the leading actor field for decades to come and will continue to break box office records and thrill fans with her performances.
