After Joan Rivers passed many were left wondering what would become of E!’s hit show Fashion Police. Would the show continue and if so, who could adequately replace the infamous Joan Rivers? Two weeks after the comedic genius died, the network announced the show would go on in Joan’s absence. Since that time the producers have been looking diligently for the right person to move the show forward.
Fashion Police is a series which airs on the E! Network. The show debuted in 2010 and had many fans tune in weekly to catch the celebrity fashion commentary by Rivers. The quick-witted comedienne was known for her brutal honesty and hilarious sarcasm. The show features hosts Kelly Osbourne, Giuliana Rancic, George Kotsiopoulos and of course, Rivers. For many viewers Joan Rivers was the highlight of the show and fans find it difficult to imagine anyone replacing their “Queen of Comedy.”
The show originally aired live commentary from red carpet events but on September 10, 2010 became a weekly program. Fashion Police was such a hit that it began as a 30-minute program but by 2012 had expanded to a full hour. During this time the show has featured multiple guest hosts, but Rivers remained the staple of the hour.
In the wake of the comedienne’s untimely demise her daughter, Melissa who is the executive producer of the show, feels her mother would have wanted the show to continue. The two top contenders as Rivers’ replacement are reportedly Kathy Griffin and Real Housewives of Atlanta’s NeNe Leakes. Griffin was brought up as the ideal replacement for weeks. Some reported that she pushed for the job while Rivers was still on life support. Griffin said the idea that she would do such a thing is disgusting. She added:
It’s not true. I know that stuff shouldn’t even bother me at this stage in my career. I thought I’d heard it all, but that one hurts because it’s as far from the truth as you can get. I would never take Joan’s job. Joan and I had a different style. She absolutely was my mentor for sure, but no.
The other contender, which is seemingly now the forerunner, is Lennethia “NeNe” Leakes. Many are surprised that she would receive a nod to step into Rivers’ shoes while others believe she is a perfect fit because of her outspoken personality. NeNe understands fashion and much like Rivers has very few filters and rarely shields her opinion. It did not take long for her to become a fan favorite as the outspoken and controversial housewife that attracted weekly attention for the housewife franchise.
The longest cast member of RHOA recently tweeted a few subliminal tweets insinuating this is her final season of the show. NeNe is the only original cast member remaining but on Sunday tweeted about God opening doors for her and moving on. Here are some of the tweets she posted:
Sometimes n life u have 2 just move on! 4 growth, 4 sanity, 4 healing! It’s a sacrifice! Pray about it
God is opening up so many doors in my life right now and I just wanna praise him! I am truly grateful
Never continue n a job u don’t enjoy! Follow ur passion & success will follow u!
NeNe has complained about her dissatisfaction with the turn of events on the reality show in times past. While she may really leave the show after the upcoming season, she has no plans to leave the world of television. Reports say, although Griffin is Melissa’s top choice to replace her mother, NeNe is trying hard to sway the producers of Fashion Police to choose her. One source believes she may end up with the job due to her serious comedic timing and because the network is looking to diversify their current panel with a different ethnicity.
When it comes to fashion the RHOA star trumps Griffin by leaps and bounds, but Griffin’s quick wit and comedic timing is generally spot on. Although Rivers had a keen eye for fashion, it was her perfection with comedic timing that caused the show to soar. Reportedly, these are not the only two prospects the producers have considered; Tyra Banks is said to be the network’s third choice, but producers have doubts surrounding the strength of her opinions.
Will NeNe Leakes replace Joan Rivers as the premiere host of Fashion Police? She is definitely a forerunner but the new season will not return until January 2015. This allows the producers the time they need to make the best decision in their efforts to move the show onward and upward.
