Allison Williams of Girls (HBO) has been cast as Peter Pan in the upcoming December 4 NBC live musical production Peter Pan Live! and she is ready to fly, with a little faith, trust, and…fairy dust, as shown in a newly-released photo. Captain Hook has already been cast — the dastardly villain will be played by none other than Christopher Walken. Actor Christian Borle will play his fellow pirate sidekick, Smee.
Though NBC announced that Allison Williams would be playing the title role of Peter Pan back on July 30, today a new photo of her as Pan has been released. Yale-educated Williams, who is a classically trained singer and has sung occasionally on Girls, looks very different as Peter Pan than she does playing Marnie Michaels.
Allison Williams had to forego her long beautiful hairstyle for one more befitting the “Boy Who Never Grew Up,” as Peter Pan has come to be called over the years. In Pan’s traditional green garb complete with a green cap with a feather in it, she looks…well, boyish, which is exactly the look that is perfect for the role.
A woman playing the part of a young boy is nothing new in the stage history of the musical play Peter Pan. It is, in fact, the rule, rather than the exception. For one of the most famous examples, actress Mary Martin, who later became the mother of Larry Hagman (I Dream of Jeannie, Dallas), donned the green garb and flew across the Broadway stage on wires. Both Mary Martin and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook won Tony Awards for their acting.
Another example of a woman playing Peter Pan was when actress Sandy Duncan starred in the role in 1979. Also, Cathy Rigby played the iconic role of Pan throughout the 1990s on Broadway.
According to Robert Greenblatt, Chariman of NBC Entertainment, Allyson Williams is “a lovely rising star.” He added that Allison will be “perfect” to save the day from Walken’s Captain Hook.
Allison Williams has stated that she is ready to play the role of Peter Pan and fly, living out the dream she has had since she was a little girl. By the looks of her sitting up in a crow’s nest in the newly released photo by NBC, she will be great in the role.
The same two executive producers who made last year’s NBC musical The Sound of Music Live! the success that it was, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, are back once again as the executive producers of Peter Pan Live! They call Williams “a major find,” and they are glad that the music will be “introduced to a whole new generation of families.”
Among the songs that Allison Williams will be singing are I’m Flying, I Won’t Grow Up, Never Never Land and I’ve Gotta Crow. As Marnie, she has recorded several songs for the Girls soundtrack. Williams sung on YouTube videos which have attracted millions of views previous to her graduating from Yale in 2010 and landing the acting job on Girls.
The upcoming NBC musical production of Peter Pan Live! on December 4 is slowly building its cast. The addition of Allison Williams as Peter Pan is inspired casting. She will be the latest actress to play the “Boy Who Never Grew Up,” in the latest adaption of the classic Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. The newest photo released by NBC, showing her remarkable transformation, is sure to further whet the appetites of viewers who are eagerly anticipating viewing the Broadway musical brought to life by NBC.
