On Thursday night, Alexander Wang and H&M showcased their collaborated line in the Fort Washington Avenue Armory in New York City, called Alexander x. The new line meshes sports wear and street wear, the latter, something the designer has become celebrated for. The collection goes on sale in stores and online in November 2014.
Wang moved to New York City from San Fransisco, were he was raised, in 2003 to attend Parsons. It was in 2007 when he debuted his first line under his name, Alexander Wang. Since then, he has been awarded several fashion awards including the Vogue Fashion Fund Award that gave him $300,000 to continue building his brand.
H&M will have the new line in stores and online starting November 7. The line will have clothes for both men and women. Key pieces for women revolve around items like little scrappy dresses and tights. He chose to keep the palette dark for this collection focusing mostly on black fabrics, though there are a few pieces of white. He has included mesh and leather in the line up. There are shirts and coats with two or more fabrics combined. The line up included sports bras as well.
In the showcase, Wang’s new line for H&M will also feature a new men’s line focusing more on athletic wear and sticking with the dark palettes. He has included tank tops, shirts, and shorts. There are also bulky looking coats and heavy sweaters. A few accessories include gloves, hats, and socks that are all imprinted with the Wang logo. He said, of his new line, “The clothes are functional as well as being fashionable.”
In 2012, on top of running his own American brand, he was asked to become the creative director of Balenciaga, a French fashion house, which he excepted. He is one of a few people who run two separate fashion houses. Mr Wang said, “He does not try to control every detail of the process.” There have been designers in the past who have run two separate fashion houses at the same time. Tom Ford ran Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent for five years.
Wang said before he accepted the job, he had conversations with the people at Balenciaga to learn what their exceptions were of him and what their vision was. Wang also had a list of things he was not going to do, including one day cross-ocean trips for interviews. He said, “At first he was terrified and rejected the offer.”
Before Wang was considered for the job at Balenciaga, they had to make sure his brand would not interfere. The two brands appeal to different people and a different market as a whole.
At his show in New York on Thursday, there were acrobats performing on trampolines and wooden boxes while celebrities watched the models showcase the collection. Justin Theroux said the show was great, “He is a Manhattan kind of designer.” He added, “He didn’t think he could wear something like that to the gym.” H&M has partnered with designers in the past. Wang’s new line will be showcased at H&M early next month.
