Angelina Jolie is one of the most renown actresses and directors in the world and throughout key points in her journey to the A-List, the star seems to be following the footsteps of Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor. Although Taylor never stepped into the shoes of a director as Jolie has, the two share a linear path as actresses and public figures.
Jolie was just awarded the title of Honorary Dame Grand Cross by Queen Elizabeth, herself. The title is the female equivalent to knighthood. The prestigious honor was awarded to the actress for her campaign in battling against sexual violence in war zones. Due to the fact that the star is an American-born citizen, she cannot title herself as Dame Angelina Jolie, but is welcome to undergo the title of Angelina Jolie DCMG if she so pleases.
Elizabeth Taylor was the other Hollywood bombshell to receive the same honor bestowed upon her. Before her untimely death in 2011, Taylor was awarded the same title as Jolie by the queen in the year 2000. Taylor’s qualifications for the honor were derived from the six-decade film career the actress had given to the world. Although Taylor spent most of her life in the limelight of Hollywood, the actress was British-born, therefore allowing acceptance for her to use the title of Dame Elizabeth Taylor.
Queen Elizabeth presides over the official ceremony of knighthood, but it is not she who chooses the individuals who are awarded. According to the British government, the selection of worthy dames is made by a designated honors committee. Said committee is composed of a group of senior civil servants and various independent members from all walks of life in the British community.
Jolie rose to Hollywood fame with her portrayal of gut-wrenching characters such as Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series and her Oscar-winning role of Lisa in Girl, Interrupted. The actress’ choice in roles reflect that of her headstrong, feministic and proactive view on life. As a consistent activist for various Human Rights campaigns across the globe, the star has achieved notoriety in the political business in addition to the world of entertainment.
Taylor expressed similar views towards the latter half of her career when her dear friend, Rock Hudson, died in 1985. The actress began her crusade for those suffering from the then-death-sentencing disease known as AIDS. Although Taylor’s efforts never amounted to those of Jolie’s both actresses felt very strongly in their personal campaigns to make the world a better place.
One more interesting linear path between the two stars is that of a particular role both actresses will play. One of Taylor’s most memorable roles is that of the Egyptian Queen herself in the 1963 film Cleopatra. Although Jolie seems to be focusing her energy on directing and writing, the star is scheduled to play the same role as Taylor in a revamped edition of the film in the coming years. The official release date is unknown, as Jolie continues to take a back seat on the acting side of Hollywood.
Angelina Jolie is seemingly following the footsteps of Elizabeth Taylor on some factors, but both household names are beautifully successful in their own light. One can only hope the efforts of each of these reigning stars will continue to inspire the rest of the world.
