Blade Runner, who is better known as the 2012 Olympics star Oscar Pistorius, was sentenced to prison for five years in the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. On Feb. 14, 2013, the Blade Runner shot her and said that it was an accident. Pistorius was known as “Blade Runner” because of his amputated lower legs. Pistorius wears fitted carbon running blades while competing. Through his heart-warming work with charity, Blade Runner has captivated many people as well as his dedication to running, despite not having both legs. Sadly, the 27-year-old will not be competing in Olympic events any time soon while serving his sentence.
It is sad to see such a gifted man going to prison and throwing his career down the drain. A law student by the name of Yazeed Mia was taken by surprise by the sentence that Judge Thokozile Masipa gave the Blade Runner. Mia said that the judge should have given him a harsher sentence. Mia believed that the sentence now gives husbands ideas on how to kill their wives and receive less time in prison.
Judge Masipa believes her judgement was fair, fitting to the situation, and to the family members. Judge Masipa would have given him a harsh sentence but did not want to give out the wrong message. Judge Masipa believes that closure was indeed given to Steenkamp’s family.
The Blade Runner’s attorney said a leader of a gang had threatened the life of his client. Pistorius was afraid of losing his life, and unfortunately, his actions caused someone else theirs. Nathi Mncube, a prosecution spokesman, said that sadness over took him with the verdict and has not decided whether to make an appeal. They have 14 days to review their options adding that the case is not about revenge, but for justice to be achieved. The people of South Africa need to be completely satisfied with the sentence.
The courtroom was packed with all kinds of media and police officers. They were ordered to stand guard. Dr. Lore Hartzenberg, a psychologist, was holding Pistorius’ hands while speaking to him gently. He was defending the Blade Runner against charges that he was derelict after killing his girlfriend saying that he had suffered emotional stress. A fan of Pistorius laid three white roses near him, in an effort to give a little joy to the Blade Runner for having to go through such a hard and difficult time.
The Blade Runner is expected to be in a one-man cell and showed hardly any reaction to his five-year sentence. A balance of deterrence and therapy must be given to Pistorius. Steenkamp, a 29-year-old TV reality star and law student, was shot three times by mistake because Pistorius believed that an intruder was in his house. Steenkamp was shot to death through the toilet door.
Protectors were also upset at the sentence given for the manslaughter conviction. They wanted a 10-year sentence for the Blade Runner, and instead, they received a conventional five-year sentence. The mother of Steenkamp believes that justice was done. Arnold Pistorius, uncle of Oscar Pistorius, said that his nephew will be paying society back on the road to his release.
