Game of Thrones is reportedly using flashback scenes for the first time in the shows history. Season five will start with scenes, which allows the writers to bring characters back from the dead. It will explain how Charles Dance is still around despite being killed off at the end of the fourth season.
The idea of using flashbacks on the show could help to tell a few stories. There are a lot of blanks missing for a number of characters, especially when it comes to the Lannisters. It is much easier to tell a story on TV using flashbacks than through hearing the story being told to other characters. It also allows for characters to remember elements of their past, without having any other characters around. This is likely going to be useful for Cersei Lannister in later episodes.
This could also be a way to drag out the season to give Songs of Ice and Fire author time to write the sixth instalment of the novel series. Game of Thrones is based on the book series, and has currently caught up to the end of the third book. Seasons five and six of the show are expected to focus on books four and five, but that may not give the author time to write the next book or two. Fans are worried what will happen when the show catches up to the novels.
Season five is the first time that flashback scenes will be used in Game of Thrones. It was something that the show runners had said would never happen, along with dreams and prophecies. The idea was to keep the TV show in the moment, rather than spend too much time looking back or forward.
Dan Weiss and David Benioff admitted that they had failed with dreams and prophecies in the show. Many will remember Daenerys Targaeryen’s prophecy, where she got to speak to Khal Drogo and see her deceased son.
The news of flashbacks came during an interview the producers were doing in Spain, where some of Game of Thrones is being filmed. Entertainment Weekly gained a rough translation, which says that there will be “flashbacks,” as in the plural. There has been no confirmation over which character will have the flashbacks, and which actors will be making a return; if any.
Guardian Liberty Voice previously reported that there was the chance that Dance was returning. The man who played Tywin Lannister admitted that his time was not quite finished on the HBO show. It left many speculating over the writers’ decisions for his character. Would they decide to bring Dance back in some way, maybe as a ghost, or would it be through unprecedented flashbacks?
Fans will have to wait to find out all the details of season five of the show. The actors are currently filming in Spain. However, filming will restart in both Northern Ireland and Croatia soon for other scenes, including Cersei’s upcoming naked walk. There is the likelihood that the flashback scenes, which will be used in Game of Thrones for the first time, will be filmed at a later date in Croatia, if Dance has anything to do with them.
