‘How to Get Away With Murder’: Mr. Darcy [Review]

How to Get Away With Murder
How to Get Away With Murder aired another entertaining episode on Thursday, October 23 on ABC with Episode 5 of Season 1 entitled “We’re Not Friends,” in which Mr. Darcy was introduced and revealed to one member of Murder, Inc., which resulted in much chagrin for Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) and promised interesting twists and turns moving forward. The 10 p.m. drama continued to up its game and keep viewers on the edge of their seats as the two central murder mysteries of the season are revealed in segments each week.

Following last week’s cliffhanger, this week’s episode of How to Get Away With Murder found Annalise confronting her philandering husband, Sam Keating (Tom Verica), with photographic evidence of his cheating ways. Annalise has Lila Stangard’s phone, thanks to Wes (Alfred Enoch), and Lila has a very naughty pic of Sam on her phone. Thus, Annalise has proof of Sam and Lila’s affair and his Anthony Weiner methods. Sam admitted that over the summer he slept with Lila about a half a dozen times. He claimed he never told Annalise because he was worried she would think he hurt Lila. The Keatings have it out–physically and verbally–and the confrontation appeared to be on the verge of violence, but both Sam and Annalise pulled back before it went to far. After they argued, he tried to console Annalise but she kicked him out for the night.

After their confrontation, a stunned Bonnie Winterbottom (Liza Weil), who entered the Keatings’ home during their argument, was not quite sure what happened and her attraction to Sam is not the least bit subtle. As a sidenote, that name is too hilarious for words. Just the imagine alone makes one laugh. How to Get Away With Murder has really pulled off terrific casting for the series. The entire ensemble is very unique and each character is distinct, as well as serves a purpose that heightens the suspense and intrigue factor of the series.

Other eventful revelations in this week’s episode of How to Get Away With Murder included the introduction of Mr. Darcy, who was revealed to be Sam Keating himself. Turns out, it was Lila’s nickname for him to her friends as she never revealed his identity. Rebecca revealed this tidbit to Sam when Annalise had them meet for a counseling session in the Keatings’ home. Of course, Annalise wanted to know if Rebecca knew who Sam was and how she might react to him, as she observed their interactions and listened to their session via recorded listening device. The other major revelation in “We’re Not Friends” was the development of the Frank and Laurel dynamic. There is obviously a heat factor between the two characters, but the relationship is very complicated. Perhaps Rebecca’s boyfriend is the problem, however, there appears to be much more to the story.

Along with the two unfolding central murder mysteries of Sam Keating and Lila Stangard (Megan West), How to Get Away With Murder also does justice to its case of the week formula as well. Episode 5’s “We’re Not Friends” featured a sympathetic client for a change of pace. Turns out, Annalise’s teenaged client, Ryan, shot and killed his policeman father who abused his mother for years. However, the media was out for blood and had pegged him as a cop killer.

Once Annalise and her team were in court, the prosecution wanted the claims of abuse against the wife thrown out. Despite Annalise’s arguments, the testimony was tossed. This was an especially harsh turn of events because they chose a jury based on an abuse defense. When Ryan’s teacher testified that he sang a song with violent lyrics at a talent show, which indicated he had problems with his dad, Annalise saw an opportunity. It allowed her to make a case for Ryan’s blog, which chronicled the abuse, to be admitted into evidence. This turn of events also opened the door to the abuse discussion for Annalise as well. Despite all of the team’s efforts, Ryan’s chances were not looking good, so Laurel saved the day and came up with a way to recalibrate the odds. When Frank learned of her tactics, they argued and ultimately kissed. Annalise decided to use the jury tampering to their client’s advantage, informed the judge and D.A., and saw the case declared a mistrial. Ultimately, Ryan was given probation and community service for his actions.

As How to Get Away With Murder aired another entertaining episode with Episode 5 of Season 1 entitled “We’re Not Friends,” in which Mr. Darcy was revealed to be Lila’s nickname for Sam Keating. This information was revealed to Murder, Inc.’s own Wes and Rebecca when they saw the wallpaper in the Keatings’ bedroom and connected it to Lila’s phone porn, which resulted in much chagrin for Annalise, as well as promised interesting twists and turns moving forward.
