Jake Gyllenhaal’s Career Is on the Rise

GyllenhaalJake Gyllenhaal’s career is on the kind of rise that most actors probably dream about. Since he starred in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Love and Other Drugs in 2010, Gyllenhaal showed some diverse and fabulous performances. In his latest movie Nightcrawler, the 33-year-old actor plays Louis Bloom, who is an obsessive loner that finds his true place in life on the streets of Los Angeles as a freelance news cameraman.

In one of his interviews, Gyllenhaal said that after he read the script for the Nightcrawler movie, he realized that he never saw something like this and it just felt completely new. For his role in Nightcrawler, which was written and directed by Dan Gilroy, Gyllenhaal received the best reviews of his career, after last year’s movie Prisoners. Despite the fact that the roles are very different, Jake’s commitment to his work is the same. Gyllenhaal lost 30 pounds for his latest movie and he even injured his hand while he was punching a mirror during one particularly tense sequence.

He and Dan talked a lot about Los Angeles and how at night, wild animals come down from the mountains, Gyllenhaal said about his preparation to play his character in Nightcrawler. Gyllenhaal believes that one cannot live in Los Angeles for a certain period of time without crossing paths with a coyote. Furthermore, the actor revealed that he and Dan were also talking a lot about Lou being a coyote, since these animals are ruthless as they prey on the vulnerable and Lou is like that too.

Jake Gyllenhaal was 11 years old when he made his screen debut in City Slickers. He became one of Hollywood’s most wanted leading men in his following roles in The Day After Tomorrow, Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain, Zodiac and Jarhead. However, it was the movie Prince of Persia that marked a clear divide in his lengthy resume. The movies that followed – End of Watch, Source Code, Enemy, Prisoners and Nightcrawler, are director-driven movies with clear stylistic approaches, which exist outside of Hollywood’s mainstream.

Gyllenhaal admitted that his instinct is, first and foremost, a guide for him and that the way of how he picks roles now has changed, because he goes there first and last. Furthermore, Jake said that many changes to his life after turning 30 made him realize that his intuition should be his ultimate arbiter of work. Among this changes in his life was also his parents’ divorce in 2010 after 30 years of marriage. Jake said that his parents went their separate ways and found a very honest truth. And as a result, even if the actor was 30 when his parents divorced, it was still a model for him.

After his parents divorced, Gyllenhaal saw how honest they were about their lives and because of this, the actor looked at himself and asked himself how can he be as honest too. The actor believes that even though someone is not living with parents any more, it is a huge influence when the people he or she loves and admires – particularly parents, start doing things to change or start being very honest. Jake Gyllenhaal’s latest movie Nightcrawler will be released on October 31
