HBO’s critically acclaimed fantasy series Game of Thrones never quite seems to leave the Hollywood limelight as one of the show’s actors, Jason Momoa, has now been making viral rounds with the original audition tape for his role in the show. Momoa plays the notable character of Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, the leader of the savage group known as the Dothraki.
Reports state that the video that is currently being seen by millions is actually the callback audition that Momoa received. Momoa is seen embracing the absolute essence of the mighty Khal Drogo who is a rather beastly and intimidating figure. The actor performed an ancient Maori dance called the haka. Before one jumps to conclusions about the idea of great war lord performing something as soft as a dance, let it be known that this was no ordinary type of movement.
The actor states that the haka is a type of ritual that was executed by New Zealand’s Maori people before engaging in battle. When the tape is viewed, one can clearly see the rage and drive of a person of war in Momoa’s eyes. Although his movement is vigorous and the actor jots out of the frame from time to time, Momoa undoubtably captured the harshness and downright terrifying demeanor that is required for his Game of Thrones character.
When attending his original audition for Game of Thrones, it was said that Momoa was given a series of sides that had lines of very minimal effect. The actor continues to tell that the particular scene he received was simply a repetitive series of dialogue that only had him saying “no” in a menacing manner multiple times with very little opportunity for an emotional performance. By suggestion of a friend in the acting field, future Dothraki lord scrapped the idea of these simple lines and went into the Game of Thrones casting whole-hog with the aggressive haka dance in place of the sides.
The shocking actions the actor displayed in his original audition captivated the interest of the Game of Thrones creative team including D. B. Weiss and David Benioff. The creatives then requested Momoa back for a second audition which resulted in the callback video that can now be viewed online. The actor’s boldness and absolute certainty in the character that he wanted to create is inevitably what won him the role, providing an excellent example for future stars-in-the-making.
Momoa, who is was born in the state of Hawaii, states that his ancestry derives from the same Polynesian culture as the Maori people of New Zealand. Taking heed of his ancestral roots, the actor took the liberty of learning of his history and educated himself on the war dance known as the haka. Taking heed of such information and putting it to use in the most practical way possible is what has now made the actor into a star. In addition to Game of Thrones, more mainstream media that features Momoa will include the upcoming Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice in which he will bring the legendary Aquaman to the big screen.
With the reveal of Jason Momoa’s Game of Thrones audition tape, one must simply be inspired by what a little courage of stepping outside of the box can do. The callback audition tape can be viewed below.
