Jim Carrey dressed up in Halloween style to celebrate his hosting of Saturday Night Live on Saturday, October 26, as a horned Elvis Presley who he dubbed Helvis. Other highlights of skits Carrey was in included recurring commercial spoofs of the Lincoln commercials featuring actor Michael McConaughey, a Chandelier dance-off with Iggy Azalea, and a Carrey family reunion skit. The musical guest was Iggy Azalea.
Jim Carrey, 52, started off his monologue dressed all in red, with horns on his head. He said that Halloween was the one time of the year he just “blended in.” He mentioned that everyone knew that Elvis had gone to Heaven, but there was a part of Elvis that just did not fit in that well in Heaven. He sang a funny song about peanut butter and banana sandwiches and pecan pie, and did a spot-on Elvis impersonation. A choir of singers came out and joied him onstage as he sang this cool song.
Throughout the Saturday Night Live episode, Jim Carrey was in commercial spoofs of Michael McConaughey’s Lincoln car commercials. He did an amazing impersonation of McConaughey, also, and a mannerism that the actor had of looking like he was rolling something between the thumb and first finger of his right hand.
In the last spot, there were two kids in the backseat that asked him if he knew he was driving only five miles an hour. He said something like “That’s pretty good for a Lincoln,” and then wondered “Whose kids are those?”
During the “Carrey Family Reunion” skit, Jim Carrey was at a family reunion in which all of the cast members of Saturday Night Live impersonated him and one claimed that he had come up with some of the lines Carrey had used in his movies. It was a pretty funny bit, though Jim Carrey was more of a straight man in the skit.
A highlight of the skit was when Jeff Daniels had a cameo in it. He co-stars with Jim Carrey in their upcoming flick, Dumb and Dumber To, which is due out in theaters on November 14. In the skit, Daniels played Carrey’s Grandpa Lloyd.
Yet another highlight of this Saturday Night Live episode was when Jim Carrey was in a skit about an office Halloween costume party. One of the co-workers, played by Kate McKinnon, dressed as the gymnast from Sia’s song Chandelier, in a nude-colored costume, had a dance-off to the song. At the end, they were joined by a third person, played by singer Iggy Azalea, dressed the same way.
The songs that Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, 24, performed during the episode were her latest single, Beg for It, and her hit, Black Widow. Special guest Rita Ora came onstage and sang Black Widow with Iggy. Beg for It was released just the day before, and it will appear on a re-release of Azalea’s first album, The New Classic. The album will have the new title, Re-Classified, and it will be available on November 24.
Jim Carrey was one of this season’s best hosts of Saturday Night Live, as was Bill Hader from last week. From the show’s opening skit, where Jim Carrey dressed up as Helvis and even did a lip-curl as he sang, like Elvis had been famous for, to the Lincoln car commercial spoofs and the Halloween office party skit and Carrey Family Reunion one, Jim Carrey got some big laughs from the audience. Comedian Chris Rock is set to host the show the day after Halloween, on November 1, 2014.
