Jimmy Fallon and Jake Gyllenhaal Play ‘Water War’ [Recap & Video]

Jimmy Fallon

On Wednesday night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, there were fantastic guests, like Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler), who played the game Water War with Fallon later in the episode. The second guest on the Tonight Show was actor and comedian Paul “Pee-Wee Herman” Reubens, who recently was on the hit series, The Blacklist! The musical guest was She & He,featuring the musician and actress Zooey Deschanel and Ward. The great rapping legend, George Clinton, sat in with the house band, The Roots.

After welcoming the studio audience, host of the Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon, began his nightly monologue, joking about people and events in today’s headlines. What follows is a summation of the monologue.

Fallon joked about the “Ebola Czar” and how he missed his very first meeting. “He didn’t want to touch the doorknobs,” Fallon said. He also made a joke about the person who was in charge of investigating the secret service being involved with prostitution, with a prostitute, himself.

“The NBA season starts this week. One of the biggest stories is LeBron James returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers.” Fallon said, introducing so-called new plays designed specifically for LeBron. It was a visual sort of joke, so loses a lot in translation.

George Clinton song with The Roots, and Jimmy Fallon said “We’re honored to have you here with us!” He showed the audience a copy of George’s autobiography. Then, he said that “Tomorrow, Gordon Ramsey will be here! He’s getting major buzz over his latest movie, Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal is here! Paul Reubens, one of my idols, will also be here, and She & Him, with Zooey Deschanel.

“Now, it’s time for Screen Grabs,” Fallon said, showing screen grabs that struck people as being humorous. These were pretty visual types of jokes…funny, but difficult to put into words without the accompanying “screen grabs.”

Someone from Israel sent in a photo of a painter he though looked a lot like Fallon. Jimmy Fallon put on a wig and tried to pose to look more like the person from the photo, and he looked pretty similar to the painter then.

Back from the break, Jimmy Fallon introduced Jake Gyllenhaal.

“Your sister, Maggie, is on Broadway,” Fallon said.

“Yes, actually she is,” Jake said. “She didn’t want to see me at first. She was nervous.” Maggie is going to be in the same play that Ewan McGregor talked about being in, ‘The Real Thing,’ opening soon.

Jake said that he will be in the Broadway play, Constellations. He also told Jimmy about the movie, Nightcrawlers. He and others try to get official footage of accident scenes and other news items, and sells them to news services.

“He’s like the ultimate entrepreneur,” Jake said. “He always wants success.” Jimmy Fallon showed a video clip from the movie. Jake looked very intense in the clip and emphatic in the demands he was making. Jimmy challenged Jake to play the game Water War right after another commercial break.

When The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon came back, Jimmy explained the game Water War. They played the card game, War, with the person with the losing hand getting water dumped over his head.

The game immediately began with a “War,” with a three-card flip, which Jimmy Fallon won. Fallon poured a pitcher of water over Jake’s head.

Jimmy lost the next two Wars, and Jake poured a glass of water over Fallon’s head two times in a row. Fallon won a War, and threw water in Jake’s face; then, Jake won a War and said “This one is for my family!” as he threw water at Fallon.

The next “War” was won by Fallon and he poured water into Jake’s lap. Jimmy Fallon won again, Then Jake got an Ace to Jimmy’s 4. Jake poured a glass of water down Fallon’s back.

Jake won the next War, getting the privilege of soaking Jimmy Fallon with a Super-Soaker. Then the Tonight Show went to another commercial break.

After the break, Jimmy Fallon introduced Paul Reubens, and when Paul came out, he danced the same dance he did sometimes in his TV series. Paul said that they will be making a new Pee-Wee Herman movie with Jude Apatow directing. Reubens told Fallon that the character came from an improv skit on The Groundlings. He said that his character “was a bad comic you would never expect to get a joke right.”

Fallon asked him about being on The Dating Game dressed up like Pee-Wee Herman. He made it on the show, and was on three times! He actually won on The Dating Game, but he never got to go on the date, as the woman got married before the date was scheduled.

Pee-Wee Herman’s Playhouse was shot on film, then immediately transferred to video. All of the episodes have been released on Blu-ray now, and the Christmas Special is on it! Reubens said that Cindy Lauper did the song, but was uncredited.

Jimmy Fallon had Paul Reubens re-voice the video trailer for The Avengers: Age of Ultron. It was pretty cool and funny! The next Pee-Wee Herman movie has not begun filming yet, but maybe it will help resurrect Herman’s career, just like his appearance on The Blacklist probably also helped bring him back to the limelight.

She & Him performed Stay Awhile by Dusty Springfield, with a little bit of help from The Roots. Zooey sang and shook the tambourine, while Ward played a guitar. Zooey has a great singing voice, and was terrific performing this oldie. The audience really got into the song and applauded enthusiastically as she finished singing. The audio of Stay Awhile is at She & Him’s Official Site at the last link below!Their upcoming album, Classics, will be on sale starting December 2, 2014.

The episode of the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon was great this Hump Day! Actor Jake Gyllenhaal talked about his latest movie, Nightcrawler, and played the game Water War with Jimmy Fallon. Then, the amazing Paul Reubens was the second guest on the Tonight Show, and he and Jimmy talked about all of the episodes of Pee-Wee Herman’s Playhouse now being available on Blu-ray
